There are indeed reciprocity agreements between MD and VA on the Potomac wrt fish/game. Not sure how they affect this issue.
VA owns none of the waters of the Potomac so they would have no effect on carrying. A fishing license would be recognized but that's all. Depending on where you are the Potomac is owned by either WV, DC, or MD. If you are in the part owned by WV you're good to go, otherwise don't get caught.

Great story, Rick. Good example for the rest of us to follow. And I agree with Gary. Sounds like a great place for an OC picnic which I would indeed attend and OC. Groups are much harder to harass.
Me too..if we plan one I'll be there as well..oc and a fishing pole

I've tried but in years of fishing it we've only caught 1 stripper. I fish for largemouth, anything else I catch is an accident. Would be a good place for an OC picnic BUT IIRC out illustrious governor has decreed that OC in a state park is a no-no, CC is fine though.
You need to go out by the Bay Bridge Tunnel for some serious stripper fishing :first:
Or Buggs Island

Rick you did better with that cop than I would have, but then again when I know I'm right my middle name changes to smart ass. He would'a cuffed me and stuffed me then got sued.

Important part of Rick's situation-

Had it not been for that, if it were me, I'd tend to agree with pushing back as long as I knew I was right. I'd be interested in the responses Rick gets from MTA and VCDL.

I can personally affirm Moccasin's statement above, as the wife and I frequently visit Colonial Beach (area further south from the Nice Bridge on the VA side of the Potomac). Spoke to LEO's down there on last visit (mid-July) the Official Boundary line of MD/VA is the low-water mark (up to 36ins/3ft) on the VA-side, everything else is ALL Maryland. Got a "crash-course" in the laws of the two states (MD/VA) and how, folks to avoid gambiling laws (back in the early days) would have docks run out into the Potomac (starting on the VA-side) to the water boundary lines, and have Riverboats dock there so that that could "legally" gamble, but still be in MD.

The area is (generally) absolutely BEAUTIFUL; they do have some newer condo's/townhomes sprouting up, etc - but otherwise it has always reminded me of Amityville (not the horror movie, but the sleepy lil town with the big shark problem).

Another vote for an OC picnic down there....

I knew it had something to do with a low or high water mark/tide but wasn't exactly sure. Just don't be standing in the water when MTA shows up and you should be ok. I don't know how dropping a fishing line in the water might change things other than for fishing, if at all.

Been to Colonial Beach many times and it is a very nice area. Any place along the Neck would be a great place for an OC picnic. Maybe we could do the beach by the Nice bridge and offer Rick's new buddy a sandwich...

Good job Rick, sounds like you handled it just fine. It could have turned out much worse.

Just another example of why NOT to go to Maryland. Even they don't seem to know where it ends.

Ain't that like Jersey? Free to get in, $20 to leave? :bangin:

I avoid Jersey, can't stand the smell. But that is how MD is from what I've seen of it, they'll let anyone in but you have to pay to get out. I guess that's the only way they can keep residents, those that can't afford the toll can't leave.

(as a Native Washingtonian I can make this statement and not be frowned...)

... we you can always go Maryland to DC to get back to VA.... (although it sounds more like a Greek Mythology story about three-headed monsters, evil half-man/half-beast creatures, and paying a toll to Hades).

No mention of politicians were used here, any depiction resembling real events and/or real persons is not intented - we now move the regularly schedule "programming" already in place.

This was an interesting story, I myself CC but have been wanting to OC for some time. I'm not comfortable OCing, although I really want to. I too agree an OC picnic would be a great idea. The OC picnics in the hampton/Norfolk area are a little farther than I would like to travel.

Where are you located, 40shooter?. There is a VCDL picnic this weekend in Salem. I'll have to check the VCDL calendar for upcoming events.

If haven't signed up for the VCDL's VA-ALERT emails, what are you waiting for?. Go to http://www.vcdl.org/static/va-alert.html to sign up now!

Hopefully, we'll see you at a future event.
