Yahoo had a video yesterday where police tackled one of the AWOL twits in the state capitol building. He tried to sneak in to get some things from his office. It was pretty funny.

The person of which you speak was not one of the 14 WI Senators who left the State. He was from the lower House in the WI legislature. He was mistaken for a demonstrator because he did not have his government issued ID out. Both the Representative and the police admitted it was a big misunderstanding. The Representative accepted his role in the incident, and apologized to the police and police apologized to him. Having spent any numbers of years working in and with WI citizens what I'm seeing is typical of them when they disagree. Btw, had he been one of the 14 Senators, a quorum would have existed and they could have assembled for a vote.

Funny how people here are trying to characterize the demonstrations in WI as some wild out of control illegal action. I for one take the word of the Chief of Police on the scene who remarked that the demonstrations have been extraordinarily peaceful.

Virtually no arrests have been made despite 100s of thousands who have participated. Could it be that some here believe the 1st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution should be amended to preclude the right of the people to assembly peacefully for a redress of grievances?

The true test of our belief in the Constitution is when someone does something that some or all of us detest, but nevertheless is protected from infringement by the government. The actions of the Westboro Baptist Church comes to mind. To me, when one says well I believe in the 1st Amendment, BUT ... . I say that BUT means you don't believe.

@Gat6 - I absolutely do not think for a moment that the demonstrations in WI are illegal. As a matter of fact there is much to be learned by watching and reserving for future deployment by folks like me. If more of "us" did that down in DC perhaps our country wouldnt be so screwed up right now.

Now, the AWOL legislators...IMHO that is an illegal demonstration and they should be arrested...

OK understand, I agree if people have an axe to grind peacefully assemble and make your case. Actually, the Senators who left are not doing anything illegal. No law, or rule binds them to be present for a vote. As I understand it, it's illegal for the governor to order them arrested, even if they were in the State. The latter is my take.

Anyone remember from your history lessons that old honest Abe Lincoln jumped out a state house window to avoid a vote?

One legislator avoiding a vote is one thing...14 legislators refusing to show up for work for weeks at a time in order to stop the state government from functioning is an entirely different issue.

+1

If you have employees that do not show up for work, for WEEKS at a time, how long would they still be employed?

Those AWOL senators are employees of the citizens of Wisconsin. IMHO, the citizens of Wisconsin should start recall proceedings against those senators!

He wasn't one of the AWOL state senators he was a Democratic house members, he was actually showing up and doing his job. He just tried to get back into the building after hours and they mistook him for a protester trying to sneak in.

IMHO, unions are the scourge of the earth. Good idea way back when they were needed but now they wreck and ruin companies.

Most of us bristle at government controls. What about union controls. In most states the union calls the shots and for some professions joining the union is mandatory along with paying the dues. Sounds pretty fascist to me...first they bleed the employees dry then they start on the companies.
****************************************************ver us
Unions are the last somewhat powerful organizations that can act in opposition to the State, and Corporations. I really don't understand why any worker believes that everything will be fine, management always acts in the best interest of workers. The corporation will pay a decent, and fair wage. As a worker, I'm perfectly ok with having no right to be involved in decisions concerning worker safety, working conditions, or grievance procedures. We all know that management is never arbitrary and capricious in their decisions. They never exact revenge, nor engage in reprisals against workers. This the bosses know best attitude is like a willing subjugation to the exercise of power over us. It's like the serfs cheering for the Lords.

Yep! As they say on ESPN's First Take. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Shouldn't we be upset about those widows and relatives suing Massey Mines over the death of their loved ones? Massey happens to be a non-union outfit. So what if they fired miners for complaining about working conditions, and safety. I'm sure it was just a coincidence that these non-union mines had the highest incidences of safety violations, and miner intimidation. Not surprisingly they paid lower wages as well.

Has every union made all the right decisions all the time? No, they have made mistakes the same as politicians, so that's not a reason to terminate unions. I close by asking: If labor voluntarily accepts a subservient position to the state, and corporations, who does that serve?

Unions to America are like ice cream to apple pie. Their creation is a right purchased in blood, in essence another American Revolution.

Perhaps if you would quit advocating giving the state more power which it promptly uses to enrich some corporations there wouldn't be a problem?

I favor criminalizing public unions-there is no way to have any competition ya know? And they are a direct burden on tax payers.

Dont care what private companies do as far as unions go.

@Kreutz

Careful buddy, you're starting to sound like me! :friends:

Criminalize it a bit much IMHO, but it can easily be stopped. Make it a requirement for employment. There are all kinds of requirements you have to meet or things you have to give up to contract or work directly for the government, non-union should be one of them exactly because of the non-competition.

You'd let market forces handle it; I am content to let the state fill the role of the unions by mandating a minimum wage, worker safety, overtime, etc....which it already does, so even private sector unions are redundant. Unions are a relic, but again I am uninterested in private sector unions, I do think the municipal ones should be outlawed, as should government bailouts and subsidies on the flip side.

I just hold a special hatred for the public/municipal unions; I am from NY and saw the damage they did. They're parasites that never get their fill!

what was really funny was watching how fast the idiot left-wingers who fled their responsibilities to represent their own constituents, were tripping over each other to get back home once this was put to rest. The sight of these morons wearing their union orange(communist) T-shirts and screaming "let us do our jobs" was absolutely ridiculous, and worse? the fools who support them were eating that crap up. I was laughing my a$$ off when I heard that the WI representatives who actually were earning their pay had figured out how to side step this ILLEGAL government shutdown imposed by the renegade democrats. What was ever more amusing was when losers like Michael Moore joined in with the crybabies on the left.....PRICELESS!!!
