Every time I drive by a WalMart it strikes me that they have trained their entire customer base that walking out in front of traffic is a competitive sport.

Re: SHMIV
On the subject of merging and the practice of lane blocking, I thought that I might share this experience relayed to me by my baby sister.
The other day, my sister was stuck in a traffic jam. Some guy flew by her on the right shoulder. She was thinking that if she had seen him coming, she might have blocked him. So, she watched her mirror, and blocked the next guy to come flying up the shoulder, who slammed on the brakes and skidded to a smokey stop, about as close to my sisters bumper as possible without making contact. At that point, it occurred to my sister that she is a tiny little girl, in a tiny little Fiat; and that perhaps she had made an error in judgment. Perhaps, she thought, such stunts would work better in her husbands truck. So, she pulled back in her lane, and let the shoulder runner by.
A few moments later, she noticed that the 2nd shoulder runner was stopped behind the first. Apparently, there was a large cardboard box on the shoulder, and the first shoulder runner had plowed right into it. The large box contained one toilet.
"How appropriate, " said my sister, "that that piece of $#!+ rushed straight into a toilet."

The thing that could have made that experience better would have been the second vehicle rear-ending the first.

Reminds me of years ago, I was in the Los Angeles area. Things had slowed down to a crawl and some enterprising drivers had decided to turn the right shoulder into a lane. Pretty soon that came to a standstill, and the right-lane folks were pretty aggressively preventing a return to the normal roadway, as the cops strolled up the shoulder asking for license and registration!!! Not often you get that much drama and entertainment out of stop-and-go traffic.
My grandfather said, "Always use your head!".
I told him, "I want to pound nails!"
He said, "Best use a hammer instead."

Lol, LA is always slowed to a crawl, every time I go through there. I note that CHP has big springy push bars mounted on the front of their cruisers, and they are not afraid to use them.

Can't stand shoulder drivers! Made my day on I-64 one time when I was spotted in traffic, a shoulder driver went by and then a trooper went passed and stopped him. I got to pass him again!
