Re: SHMIV
Dumbass! Never, ever pick on a vehicle bigger than you! Most truckers are very good at what they do, and will be polite if given the chance. But piss one off? Dumbass!

Ran into SHMIV at the Colonial Heights Wal-mart tonight. What happens when two VGOF member run into each other? After Southern introductions, the same conversations online become MUCH faster! HAHAHAH

Ha... and more detailed, lol.
I just back on the yard; truck still in the shop. They were about to pull it out, then I told them that they misunderstood the problem. Now I see the hood back up.

Nah. That red Focus, I am sure, as soon as he got out of that, he probably cut off another truck. People are effin' oblivious.
Another hare brained move that I frequently see is someone like that Focus driver will perceive a sleight, then proceed to cut in front of the offending truck then slam on the brakes. Makes me glad that I have a dash cam.

You know what that "cut/sleight" is called in the face-to-face world?

I was expecting an impromptu shopping trip over to Dance's Sporting Goods.Reverenddel wrote:Ran into SHMIV at the Colonial Heights Wal-mart tonight. What happens when two VGOF member run into each other? After Southern introductions, the same conversations online become MUCH faster! HAHAHAH

I thought the pic was hilarious, & it immediately made me think of SHMIV
I've got a lot of miles under my belt for a non-professional driver around 1,000,000. Have been both coasts, as well as Mexico, & Canada. I've seen a lot of crazy dooky on the roads over the years. One of the funnier to me, yet cool at the same time...... is when a road reduces to one lane, whether construction, or an accident, there is always that group of people who try to ride the shoulder, & cram in at the last minute.
Multiple times, I've seen truckers block this action from happening. I laugh every time.

Re: SHMIV
Dance's was closed (They close WAY early for some reason), AGREED!
Merging lanes isn't a freakin' game... you see the arrow, merge/let someone merge. If we all did this at speed, and cooperatively... no backups....
Nah gonna happen!

Re: SHMIV
I have been known to take part in that lane blocking action. If more drivers had radios in their trucks and spoke English, the lane blocking would be easier to pull off.
Merging is ridiculous. Everyone is in such a hurry to be first, and in all those individual acts of selfishness, everyone plays a part in holding themselves up.
I generally try to determine the lane that I need, get in that lane as early as possible, and hold my position. It makes sense in a truck; it's not like weaving through traffic is a possibility. But, I've done the same in smaller vehicles, too. It seems to help in avoiding accidents.

Re: SHMIV
Works both ways. I generally maintain a lane for a mile prior to an exit or merge. Rt. 40 Oklahoma and some trucker decided that two miles was where I should be lining up. I got some choice names for that cat.

Re: SHMIV
I hear ya. One mile is reasonable; that's where I generally grab my lane. Unless traffic is thick, then I position myself 3 or 4 miles back. It's not uncommon to have some oblivious {phrase censored} plant himself right next to me for several miles, ignoring my signal. If it's night time, he'll put his brights in my mirror for good measure. In the truck, it's just easier to be in the lane that you know you'll need. Which, on I40 Oklahoma, in OK City, is obnoxious. It's impossible to maintain your lane and stay on 40; lots of lane changes required.
Usually, when I start participating in blocking lanes, traffic has already slowed to 20mph or less.

I used to have a sailboat, and we actually had a formal race schedule each year on Watauga Lake. The scramble of a dozen or so 18-36 foot boats at the start of a race to tack back and forth so as to cross the start line between 2 bouys at exactly starting time when the horn sounded was quite a fur-ball, and the right of way rules pretty much depended on who was on which tack (port or starboard). An old hand at it and sailing a boat that was half-again longer and three times heavier than mine explained it for me when I was a dangerous newbie (there ain't no brakes OR reverse on sailboats). Same deal. But the way he put it was,

Re: SHMIV
Lol, I've always kinda kept to the rule that "The largest vehicle gets the right of way." Don't try to battle for position against a Mack, if you happen to be driving a Toyota. That's just stupid.
I used to see pedestrians in Colonial Williamsburg wander out in front of busses, on the theory that, "Hey, I'm on a crosswalk; they gotta stop." I used to the that pretty frequently.
Personally, I think Drivers Ed classes ought to include ride alongs with CDL drivers; the guy's that run heavy and require long stopping distances, so the average driver may recognize the stupidity of ignoring large vehicles.
