If you wish to pop out and shoot long arms on like your lunch break or just for an hour, don't come to Roanoke.

No public indoor/outdoor ranges here, closest is in Craig county, so you're looking at two hours round trip with set up and clean up.

There is an indoor pistol /.22 rifle range that was supposedly expanding for indoor long arms, but i don't think that ever happened.

I forgot to mention the ever popular handgun safety card, 10 day baiting period and no NFA unless you are a rich Hollywood type. They are now considering an ammunition purchase card like the HG safety card, it just keeps getting better and better, for them.
We are looking out I66 beyond Haymarket.

I just got back from a bike ride that started in Haymarket. Once I left the Gainesville - Haymarket area, it was pretty much countryside - corn fields and cows and some nice horse estates. The suburbs are encroaching some areas, but it's still nice countryside.

When I moved here from southern CA, it took some adjustment on scale. The last place I lived in LA before I moved here was Redondo Beach. Even after driving 90 miles east, I was still in cities and suburbs. When I moved to NoVA, I looked at the map, and figured that development stopped around Manassas (a little east of Haymarket), and therefore, Manassas must be 90 miles away. Turns out, it's only about 20 miles away. Once you're beyond that, it starts opening up into more and more countryside. If I drive 90 miles east of NoVA, I'm in the Shenendoah Valley.

The range that Chasbo posted will be fairly close to you, and it's supposed to be a nice one when it opens. Range 82 isn't too far away, and you'll also be reasonably close (15 miles or so) to the NRA HQ and range, and the Bull Run shooting center (skeet and trap). There are just a few of the options available to you.

I shoot at Potts Slope just off Hwy 311 in New Castle. This is a year+ old article but shows a little of the range. Its pretty nice for a gun range where you can shoot rifles and it is free. It is about 1 hour North of Roanoke.

Off topic. We used to live just off Hwy 221 in SW Roanoke County.

There is also the Fairfax Rod and Gun Club in Eastern Prince William County. They have nice pistol and long gun ranges as well as a nice skeet range. Don't know what the dues are, but the place is kept up very well.
