Do people in VA have & shoot firearms?

Post by jmax »

I realize this may be a bit controversial but there are numerous posts in the comment section, I know as I have posted but very few fresh posts in any of the firearm/reloading/for sale/places to shoot/modifications sections. Hence the basic question do Virginians have firearms and do the shoot them? I am curious and if they do, why no posts?

This is the Virginia Gun Owners Forum. What do you think is our common trait?
Love of knitting?
I would guess (with good cause) that most all of the members of this forum are gun owners and probably close to all of us regularly practice with them. Some of us probably not enough.

Then again, since Big Brother is watching, it is possible that a lot of us have lost our firearms in unfortunate boating accidents and only buy ammunition to keep it out of the hands of the psychopaths out there.

No - absolutely not! Guns are dangerous. Especially the black ones.

There is a pin shoot in Louisa coming up in late September, I've been considering going to watch... seems thrilling and risky at the same time.

This state while being mostly gun friendly is very anti gun fun, lol. Without the ability to shoot on public land, we're pretty screwed. The FFL prices are outrageous. The Gougers prices are outrageous and it's pure luck when you find someone willing to sell at pre SH prices. I've been here 2 years and I haven't seen 9mm at the Williamsburg Walmart even one time.

Maybe I just got lucky (not really) moving to the Burg but I haven't seen good in store prices yet. From Richmond to Va Beach the only guns under MSRP are POS Springfields & Taurus. Hk's, Sigs, Walthers, Nighthawks are all through the roof. SSG Tactical is selling plane jane Hk45's for near $1300 and it doesn't even include a reach around.

The Marksman has a decent price match policy going on right now but their range sucks. I practically gave birth to a 10 pounds sweat baby last summer trying to shoot in their 110* range.

If anyone has any good ideas for me and the Peninsula area I'm willing to try and like living here, lol. The trees are nice.

Is this the Virginia *Gun* Forum?

Yikes!!

I thought this was the Virginia *Fun* Forum!!

No, I don't have *a* gun. I do have fun, though.

Whew, at least this isn't the Virginia *Sun* Forum, or even worse, the Virginia *Bun* Forum. I don't want to see anyone's buns, especially if they've been in on the run in the sun.

We also have sporadic discussions regarding the idiosyncratic nature of the English language. Etymology is a fascinating subject. Don't you think?

There were the usual snide comments but some nuggets were uncovered. My wife and I are putting our house in SoCal up for sale mid August and moving to NOVA to be closer to our kids.
First pin shooting, I am an old Second Chance Master Blaster and would love to find where those matches are located.
Second, expenses and availability, all of you have no idea how tough it is in The Peoples Democratic Republic of California. The DOJ has an approved list of handguns that can be sold, no defined "assault weapons" can be brought or sold, no mail order ammo at the end of the year, no private party sales even for Curios and Relics, CMP must go through a dealer, ranges, ha very limited, prices are out of sight.

When my wife have been out there we have been astonished at the number of gun shops and prices.

My view is based on living in a state where laws are designed to limit access,
.

You can even get carry permits and as a former LEO from a different state I cannot even get one.

The pinshoot I spoke of is not far from Lake Anna, put on three times a year by some local Masons. All proceeds go to charities. The next one is Sat Sept 27th, they usually go from 9am til 4-5pm, depending on how many shooters are there.

It's a lot of fun, and a great bunch of folks.

Are these 4'X8' tables with pins 3' from the back edge or tiered tables used at Second Chance?

No, it's a different format, six real pins at 10 yards and 6 steel plate pins (a pin plate rack) at 15 yards.

At first I thought the OP was serious.

As far as some folks reporting high prices and hard to find supplies... I'm kind of shocked to hear it. NOVA is really heavily Blue... and all prices here are sub MSRP and at or below prices pre-SH. I bought a 420 round case of 5.56 62 gr round for $126. That's like 30 cents a round. I also got 1,000 rounds of 22LR for $45. 4.5 cents a round is a pretty good price too.

I bought 2 AR's in the past couple months. One the MSRP was about $2,400 and I paid less than $2,200. The other had a $2,200 MSRP and I paid less than $2,000.

And I have seen FFL fees from $2 to $30 depending on what the transaction is and what's involved. I'm not sure what you would consider high or over priced though. I think an FFL receiving and transferring an NFA item that they are making no profit on, and then charging you $30 for all the paperwork and processing... seems kind of fair to me.

I moved to northern Virginia from southern California over 20 years ago. NoVA leans a little anti-gun, but fortunately, the rest of the state balances us out and ensures that we have some reasonable gun laws. If you get 40 miles away from NoVA, you'll find yourself in a different world.

Welcome to the state.

Trailrunner is correct. If you don't mind having elbow-room, and can handle the lack of facilities that would otherwise be present in the burbs, come west.

Two major routes to NOVA - I-66 from the west, and I-95 from the south. You'll find pockets of rural living along 95 between Fredericksburg and DC, but those are quickly be developed. The areas out along 66 are being developed, but at a much slower pace.

Can't imagine living with the restrictions you describe. :welcome:
