Based on the statistics, with premium ammo, if you do your job and shoot the person center of mass, you will get a 90+% one shot stop with 9mm. I did some gel tests. I did some other tests. It runs in my guns. That is good enough for me to say it is ok for personal protection.
BUT if you have the option of carrying something bigger, better, badder, then go ahead do it. 45ACP with premium ammo will get you 1-3% points more with a center of mass shooting.
But here is the odd thing, that %will actually go down with a 44mag. My guess is that is because people don't shoot the 44mag as well.
.45 ?
Re: .45 ?
I'd like to make thru the rest of my life with out the use of a fire arm outside of the shooting range.
I like the looks of the Kimber Solo in 9mm because it fits in the hip pocket of my blue jeans. With the proper holster to cover the outline. This nice little pistol will serve my needs nicely year round.

Those one shot stop stats were disproved a long, long time ago. They're heavily influenced by way to many factors and the sample space is generally too limited. Read the FBI studies from the late 90s to till now for updated information. The military has a few good ones as well.RWBlue01 wrote:Based on the statistics, with premium ammo, if you do your job and shoot the person center of mass, you will get a 90+% one shot stop with 9mm. As others have said, it comes down to personal preference. Just use what feels good to you. And don't rush in to a 45 if it's not what you really want. You might regret it!

Re: .45 ?
I just upgraded from a 9mm CCW to a .45 - I went with the XDs Springfield, it gives 5 plus 1 capacity and as I don't plan on getting into a prolonged gun fight, that's enough for me, While NO one handgun caliber has ever been proven to be the end all cartridge, the .45 has been proven over years of combat to outperform the 9mm as a one shot manstopper, granted that's using ball ammunition and modern day 9mm HP's perform very well, For me only, I perfer a .45 over a 9mm anyday I can carry one.
The only advantage the 9mm had for me was they were easily concealable, But with the XDs now on the market, that's changed when it comes to .45 CCW -- Think of the XDs as about the size of a Kel-Tec PF9 or a Ruger LC9, But in .45 caliber.
YMMV

According to Massad Ayoob, that's not necessarily true based on his data in his concealed carry book. Typically one stop shot with a 9mm is typically not going to get it done. However, there's a better chance with the higher cal. .45
But, to be honest, who here would ONLY fire one round if they're or they're families lives are on the line.
Get what feels good. I personally prefer the .45 ACP over the 9mm. I also like the .40 cal.
I have one of each.
Point? Get what feels right for you.
