Ruger LCP vs. SW Bodyguard (.380)

I have two pocket style weapons. A S&W 642 that I carry with a pocket holster and loaded with Speer Gold Dot 135 grain +P short barrel load. The other is a Ruger LC9 which I have a pocket holster for plus two IWB holsters. I carry it loaded with the Hornady Critical Duty 135 grain +P.

I have shot the Ruger LCP quite a bit before deciding to buy the LC9. Not much bigger but has much better sights and a bit more powerful round.

By the spec sheet it's not much bigger, but when I tried one in my jeans pocket it seemed like it was too big for that type of carry. Would make a great thin/small carry gun for other locations, but for an average pocket it seemed too big. However, I've only looked at an LC9...carried a LCP often. Your thoughts on actual pocket carry of an LC9?

The S&W bodyguard is a better quality pistol.

I don't have either because I don't believe in .380 as a self defense round. (9mm minimum)

That being said, My job requires me to be around a lot of guns. I've spent a bunch of time with both and ive noticed that Ruger quality control is going down the drain. S&W is better by far.

I have been carrying the LC9 in a DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster. I don't wear jeans though. I usually wear Tru-Spec pants or shorts which have pretty large pockets.

Yes, I could see it working in "tactical" pants.

I like my LCP because it has a smooth outside and operates well. No safety and a heavy trigger is my preferred style anyway. Its harder to shoot but that just forces you to train more, which is a good thing anyways.

For you folks complaining about it sticking or not operating reliably, try polishing the rails and/or using mili-tec all over the thing. It helped me.

IMHO, it should work flawless from the factory. It's advertised as a self defense/ CCP pistol. People should be able to trust their lives with it. Sorry, but I don't trust a pistol that needs work from the buyer to operate properly.

It made it feel a little smoother but honestly it worked just fine before. Shot maybe 500 rounds through without mili-tec and never had any fails to feed or eject.
After militec shot approx 400 more rounds. Runs the same. Just feels smoother when I rack it with my hands.

The handful I've seen all worked well out of the box, as does mine. Ruger has a good reputation for basic firearms that just work.

Just thought I would post a quick follow up on this thread.... after a year or so... I ended up buying a 'Bodyguard'.... then after several trips to the range... I gave my little LCP to my daughter. I keep the Bodyguard in the center console of my SUV... not a carry weapon but sort of a 'backup to the backup'... type thing... I also bought a Shield in .40 and put my LC9 in the safe... I like all 4 of the above guns but these Smiths are hard to beat... IMHO... of course guns are very much like women... It's all just a matter of opinion.... sort of like... "whatever flips your trigger"... and I have never tried to tell anyone what they should or should not carry... I am of the opinion that the only 'bad' choice in a concealed carry weapon, is the one you left at home.

I replaced my LCP with a P32. I don't like the .380 snap. I wish Ruger made .32.

I love my LCP. Easy to carry, shoots nice, especially after the 13# recoil spring upgrade and Sweet Pea Trigger
