a chp is no guarantee of faster turnaround on a bg check. the only it really does for you serve as 2nd id and to lift the existing one-handgun-per-month purchase rule and repeal of that statute is on the governor's desk waiting to be signed.

also, bugging the circuit court clerk on the status of your chp application will likely only pi$$ them off, depending on their general attitude towards chps, in general. by statute, they have 45 days to issue or deny. until then, technically, they're still in compliance. once they pass that, then you have some power in order to pressure them to follow statute.

circuit court clerks are overseen by the office of the chief justice of the va supreme court. i've read that people who have had trouble getting action by or after day 45, have had really good luck escalating to them.

In regards to the CHP, thought it would speed up the process.

We have had discussions about this before. The only time that I've been delayed is when I've used my CHP for my second ID. A few others had the same experience. Now I use my voter registration card.

I brought that with me when I applied my my CHP.

I know you are talking about purchasing when using voter card.

Sheriff's office did not look at it.

I will wait till it gets here.

It was approved in 2 weeks.

They must batch process.

And no, I do not want to anger anyone and have further delays.

Time frame just does not match what I was told.

After the first time I used it mine as a second ID, every transfer I used it flew through in 5 minutes. The first time took about an hour because my permit wasn't in the system.

I always use my CHP and my driver's license. Only one time have I failed to get approved within a few minutes. I fill out the Virginia form first and am usually approved before I get the federal form done. Only time I ever got held up they said there was a message on the screen that the system was down. Got my CHP real quick, too (that was back when they first started handing them out). Probably didn't hurt any that I was on a first-name basis with the Sheriff, the Commonwealth's Attorney, the Clerk of the Court, and the Judge, but I was also deserving of the permit, too. Being out here in a small community where everybody knows everybody ain't ALL bad, I reckon.

If one thinks calling them to find out the status of a chp permit "pisses them off or delays the process" is wrong. lol. Im a tax payer, they are public servants and I have the right to call as many times as I choose. That is the typicall attitude of most just sit back and wait... tick tock tick tock.....

i'd hope they'd be efficient and get it done asap, too. my comment about calling to "bug" them is to point out that statute allows them 45 days to issue or deny. whether any of us feel they are just inefficient or stalling, is immaterial, as long as they comply with statute as it is currently written. don't like it? get a patron in the ga to introduce and shepherd a bill to change the statute.

calling "as many times as" you choose is your option and if it gives you satisfaction then, by all means, do so, but it's not likely to have much effect on the clerk. there's nothing that compels them to hand over your permit prior to the 45th day, regardless of when the judge signed the order. some circuit clerks make a point, unofficially of course, of stretching it to the end of the statutory limit. there are a number of posts here and elsewhere documenting it. fairfax comes to mind.

i joined with folks lobbying hard for constitutional carry (hb139) this session. it would have done away with *any* requirement for a conceal permit. unfortunately, it's in the house committee chairman's 'pocket' and won't be debated, this session at least. i did the same against all of the so-called 'castle' bills, which would have been a major step backwards for self-defense in va. we've basically won that battle for this session. which bills have captured your passion?

so, i don't consider myself one of the "just sit back and wait" crowd. i simply choose to pick battles more likely to make a difference and then take the actions available to me.
