How long does it take to take home a gun once purchased.
How long does it take to take home a gun once purchased.
Once one purchases a gun, how long does it take to take home?
Hopefully that day.
Hopefully that day.

As soon as the background check is completed, and you pay for it, it goes home with you. Some people are delayed by the VSP's background check, which seems to be a lot slower these days. But others are cleared in a few minutes.
The reason for the delay is a much discussed topic these days.

So we have Federal as well as State police checks?

The VA State Police manage the bg check process. There are 4 state databases that are checked and an automated link to the federal NICS.DW44VH wrote:So we have Federal as well as State police checks?

I guess it depends on how far your drive home is
Re: How long does it take to take home a gun once purchased.
Anywhere from instantly to 3-4 days. No way to know until you try.

I've been on 'delay' for 7 days, for a rifle.meak99 wrote:Anywhere from instantly to 3-4 days. No way to know until you try.

Re: How long does it take to take home a gun once purchased.
My last seven purchases have all been from FFLs with NICS checks in Ohio.
My answer to the OP's question has to be:
It depended on how far the store or gun show was from my house, weather conditions, and speed limits.
In other words, I've never had a delay due to the NICS system.
HOWEVER, that was in Ohio. I haven't bought a firearm in Virginia yet.

Holy smokes. I've yet to have to wait that long. I'd be calling VSP before I got to that point to find out what the F&@* is going on. Also, call your legislator and let them know the situation too. This has got to get fixed. Either fund the damn system, or get rid of it in favor of the Federal check only.VaEagle wrote:I've been on 'delay' for 7 days, for a rifle.meak99 wrote:Anywhere from instantly to 3-4 days. Longest wait I have ever had is 20minutes, and I just browsed more guns while I waited.
Re: How long does it take to take home a gun once purchased.
I purchased a gun just after I received my CHP, and used that as my second ID. The purchase was delayed a few hours. Every purchase since then has been near instant, but I haven't bought anything in a few months.

I am in Williamsburg, VA
Still waiting for my CHP

Was approved on Feb. 7, 2012 according to online court dockets
Should I wait the 45 days or call?

My wife has a different view. She thinks the house payment, food, and other bills are actually important.

I've also been one of the lucky ones. Never had to wait for a check. It usually finishes before I've even filled out all the paperwork.

Same for me, too. Longest I waited was 24 hours due to a delay. All others were instant. Even my two gun purchase was instant. I guess I'll count my lucky stars(?). Good thing about those instant NICS setups is it gets me out of the gun shop before I can find something else to buy.

Hmm it took me a week once, they had to order my apparently rare judge. My others were the same day.

Sounds like your CHP process was like mine. The judge signed it at the 30 day point, but they didn't mail it until day 45. I suspect you will see it in The mail next week.
Never had a handgun purchase in VA take longer then 15-20 minutes for background check.
Why are you waiting for the CHP to buy? Just don't carry it concealed until you get your CHP.

Best guess without using mapquest is 1 hour from w-burg to richmond. HECK YES START to call, anoy them untill the paper work goes through. Typically when it comes to these things I call obsessivly to the point they no longer want to hear from me to expidite things if ya know what I mean. BTW why are you waiting for a chp to purchase? And the longest I have ever waited was........ Never heard back. Someone forgot about me.
Re: How long does it take to take home a gun once purchased.
joeshmo,
In regards to the CHP, thought it would speed up the process.
Question is, whom do I contact about CHP permit status?
State Police, City Clerk, Sheriffs Office?
