gun purchase delayed... & CHP question

Post by newdovo »

Hey Folks,
This happened a few months ago, but I thought I would see if others have had a similar experience or have any thoughts about it.
I received my CHP a few months ago. A couple weeks afterward I was at my local gun store purchasing a handgun. When asked for ID, I gave them my driver's license and gave them my CHP as the second ID. For previous purchases I have used my voter ID card, but since my CHP was tucked behind my DL I gave them that. Filled out all the paperwork, etc. ...you know the drill. And it came back delayed. In the several gun shop purchases I've made over the last few years, this has never happened before. Typically, by the time I go pick out some ammo to go with it and make my way back to the counter, it's done. Everything worked out OK and I ended up going back later in the day to complete the transaction.
When the guy initially came back to the counter and told me it was delayed, he asked if I had been delayed before & I told him "no." Another guy working the counter asked him if he marked it "concealed" and he had. Apparently there's a place at the bottom of one of the forms that the gun shop fills out that makes note of this? Why would this even be considered? BTW, I never made any kind of statement like "This is gonna be my new CC gun" or anything like that.
I know that the State Police keep up with CHPs and that it's tied to your DL; also, I wasn't within 30 days since my last purchase, although a CHP renders this point moot.
So whaddaya think? Was the fact that I handed him my CHP and his "concealed" marking on the form related to my delay? Can anyone shed some light on the "concealed" notation of the form?

I have had it happen to me. Exact same thing as you describe, had used voter ID but decided to use CHP instead and more than 30 days since last pistol purchase. Hey, it made sense since I was buying a handgun. What had in the past taken less that 5 minutes ended up taking over 4 hours. The FFL told me that he sees more delays when someone uses their CHP than when they don't. His advice was that unless you had to use it, less than 30 days since last handgun purchase, don't. It's not the FFL, it's the VSP or NICS. I have bought 2 or 3 pistols since then and not used the CHP, back to 5 minutes for approval.

Welcome to the forum.

Oh, wow. This exact thing happened to me as well, but I was buying a shotgun, not a pistol. I used my CHP as second form of ID and it took over an hour of me walking around the F'burg Gun Show before it came back. My previous purchase at the gun show a couple of months previous, before I had my CHP, I got approval within 5 minutes.

Interesting - I'll never use my CHP as a secondary form again. It's a bit counter-intuitive though - I would assume that using a CHP as a second ID would make them (NICS) just go ahead and approve it on the spot.

That was exactly what I thought. Figured my newly acquired CHP would work great for the second form of ID. Boy was I wrong. It's funny though, many states do not require the NICS if you have a CHP.

Hmmmm. This is one reason I waited several months before applying. I recently received mine and had every intention of using it instead of my voter card. Now I think it'll stay neatly tucked in my wallet.

My fear was/is backdoor "registration." Once you get issued a CHP they've got you in the database. I think in VA dealers are only required to keep transfer forms for a short period of time and I dont think those get plugged in anywhere from the paper copy - unless there is a hook in the NCIS check.

In the U.S. dealers are required to keep transfer forms 20 years. If they go out of business they must transfer the forms to ATF. Some form of backdoor registration is possible, but remember that you always could have sold a firearm in a private sale. Some states (NY for one) require you to list your pistol on the CHP and make changes when you sell or buy one. Just because we have a CHP and bought a pistol doesn't prove we still own it.

Thanks for the welcome!
I'm glad I asked about this. Those were some of the thoughts I had, too, as I handed it to the guy. I'll make sure the voter card is in my wallet for the next one.
You know, the real problem for me would be waiting in the store for an hour ( or hours). "Excuse me, sir. Do you have a large cart that I could use for my shopping convenience whilst I wait?"

Ouch. I thought I read somewhere that they were only required to keep them for a short while. It does look like 20 years. At least they remain with the dealer but subject to inspection.

So what's the problem with using a large shopping cart in a gun store while you wait for approval? :hysterical:

If I type it you can believe it's 99% correct. I'm never wrong, thought I was once but it was a mistake. :hysterical:

Hey it could be something more than that. I dont know if you read WND. I follow them mainly because of the birth certificate issue. Here's an interesting article. I have no clue about whether or not its true its still interesting just to read.

[I honestly hope posting a link to WND doesnt offend anyone. They are after all a true right wing extremist site. If it does, my apologies and please Mr Moderator delete at your discretion.]

I know several people who feel he is the anti-Christ. From my studies I do not believe it is him. I don't think the U.S. is spoken of anywhere in Revelation and therefore the anti-Christ will not come from here. I do believe conditions have to right for the rise of the anti-Christ and that the condition of the presidency of the U.S. is a condition that could forestall the anti-Christs rise. The correct president must be in office for that to happen, and I believe that could be the current situation.

And all this because someone used their CHP to purchase a handgun and got delayed by the NICS. Is this the start of the "Slippery slope"? :machinegun:

Funny how things go OT, isn't it? Especially when there isn't anything to do at work.
