Removing brass does not sound right. The inside of that die should be close to mirror smooth. If it's rough at the taper (crimp) section, that may be your problem. I'm not sure which die set you have but they should have come with instructions as to how to use them and what they will do. I know RCBS...

When shooting cast bullets, it's important to have the slug properly fit the throat and have the alloy hard enough to withstand the pressure but not too hard. A hard, undersized slug will lead just as much if not more than a soft slug in front of too much pressure. Velocity, at least at pistol veloc...
