.40 S& W Ammo suggestions

Post by Riposite »

Hi All,

I am looking for some suggestions as to what is a good target ammo to run through my glock 23. So far I have tried the Federal made for Wal-Mart stuff and wasn't too thrilled by it, I am going to try some Winchester White and some Mag_tech next, but curious if anyone has any first hand knowledge of what a good FMJ round to use for range work.
Thanks

I've never had an issue with bulk reloads from Georgia Arms in 9mm or 45ACP.... buy a bag or two of thier .40 the next time they come to town for a gun show. If it works, go with a can of 500 or 1000.

This stuff is a little dirty; but it's relatively inexpensive and reliable range ammo. It's not wimpy either.

i shoot a mix of wwb, rem umc and federal at the range. some seems dirtier than others, but i've had no failures outta my sig p229r yet. it just eats what i feed it and then asks for more.

I've only put 100 rounds through it so far and they were all Federal Champion (their wal-mart brand -i assume it's basically the same as American eagle) and it was a bit dirty , plus the 24th round failed to eject the casing properly but that could of also been the fact the magazine was brand new and maybe the spring hasn't broken in properly yet for feeding.

I think Federal Champion is notch below American Eagle quality wise. It's also a little under powered compared to most other brands.

I've ran a few thousand rounds of Georgia Arms in an XD.. A little dirty but very consistent. Never had a failure..

just a follow up-went to Silver Eagle for the first time today and put 50 rounds of the winchester white 165 grain thru it and 100 rounds of the mag-tech 180 grain
Both shot superior to the Federal Champion and no issues.. I think I like the Mag-tech better, but the Winchester was fine and is readily available at Wally World> I will look for the Georgia arms booth at the next gun show in Chantilly.

I like the Federal Champion just fine, but I also like WWB, as well as Federal American Eagle.

On one of the glock forums I have read that Glocks are finicky about remanufactured ammo -does anyone know if there is any truth to this?

My Glocks do seem to be a bit more sensitive to reloads. You may want to avoid them in a .40, what with it being a relatively high pressure round (and don't .40 Glocks still have unsupported chambers?).

I have to disagree on the .40 and reloads KB myth. I only say this from experience. I have put over 8k through my favorite G22 and would have to say that over 70% of those (and the last 5k+) were reloads. I was a late bloomer to reloading and now I shoot nothing but in all the calibers I shoot (9mm, 38, .357, .40sw/10mm, .44 mag, 45acp and 5.56) . I have never experienced a fail to feed, eject, KB, only smiles. For whoever raised the issue about the magazine not being broken in. There is no break in on Glock magazine. If it is not functioning correctly. Call Glock and let them know. You will find that customer service is exactly as advertised.

I now shoot nothing but reloads (my own) through my G22s. Never an issue. Glock chambers are "unsupported" but only at the 6 o'clock position. If you are worried about this, install an aftermarket barrel. This will also give you the option to shoot lead instead of FMJ or Plated bullets exclusively. This can reduce your reload price. I just don't mess with lead only bullets as I do not see the need to drop in a custom barrel.

Dirty doesn't seem to matter with a Glock. While this may cause an uprise amongst the group. I know a guy that is quickly approaching 10k in his G22 without a cleaning. It is a nasty sight, but it is what it is.

I still shoot stock barrels on my 22s and I can tell you it is all about how and what you reload your .40 with. If you want a good recipe that is "forgiving" for first time reloaders, and much more accurate than factory junk PM me. Reload, it is way cheaper and you earn a merit badge that will last you a lifetime.

*edit* spelling, I suck!

I put through several brands through a Glock 22 and XD, depending on what price I find. WWB, Remington UMC, Blazer Brass & CCI Lawman. All have worked really well for me.

I have at least a 1,000 rounds of Remington UMC through each of my .40's. There for awhile it was the cheapest I could find. I never had a problem.

I like to use Remington green box when I can afford it. But mag-tec is a decent round for the price. A bit dirty but nothing a well oiled and maintained tool cant handle.

I found the mag-techs were cleaner than the Winchester White box
and even with shipping from Midway it is the same price as the Winchester White-the problem is unless I am buying in bulk the hassle of waiting for it to come UPS
