Here's my email to them and their response:
Strangely, their response below is almost verbatim the words coming out of the security guy's mouth about "The mall is private property and we don't allow visible carrying".Rick wrote: Hello,
I was asked to leave the mall yesterday because I was carrying a handgun for
personal protection. I told the sergeant that since I was legally carrying
my sidearm, that I was within the rules posted on the property. He
indicated that if I was carrying concealed, that I could have stayed, but
since I had my shirt tucked in (I was still in my work clothes) and since my
firearm could be seen, that I was not allowed to stay.
The entire conversation was very pleasant and cordial, but I would have
liked to have finished school shopping for my 4 children instead of being
told to leave.
The rules posted at the entrance indicate "No weapons except in accordance
with state and federal law" (or something to that effect). I was in
accordance with state and federal law and I kindly attempted to explain that
to the sergeant, but he wasn't going to budge, so I took my family and left
the property.
Can someone please take a few moments to train your security force to
understand the rules posted at the entrance?
Thank you for your time. I look forward to your response.
Rick
So, why does their signage indicate that "No weapons are allowed except as allowed under state and federal law" if they aren't going to follow state and federal law?Spotsy Mall Property Management wrote:As you may or may not be aware Spotsylvania Towne Centre is private property and a private land owner has the ability to set the policies which people must abide by while on the property. The guide lines we use are for people with concealed weapons permits which require that the weapon be concealed not visible to the public. The carrying of the weapon in the open would be a violation of the permit to carry. In your case you had the ability to take the weapon to your car and continue to shop, but chose differently.
Although we greatly appreciate your business and would like you to continue to shop with us, we will keep our policy in place on weapons in sight of the public. The only individual allowed to carry openly on the property are Officers of the Law while in the performance of their duty.
Thank you for expressing your concerns.
