i own two firearms that are mine but were never sold to me. my father pased away and they became mine. i plan on open carrying my sigma sw9ve and am worried about being stopped by the police. i was just wondering if there is any proof of ownership i would have to present to the police?

Not that I am aware of. There is no registration in VA, so there is no way for one to prove on the spot that they are the owner. As long as you are legally able to own the gun, then you are okay. Welcome to VGOF!

Under federal law, you may take receipt, and transfer across state lines without using a FFL if you inherit the arms.was your father a VA resident? And to those that know for sure, does it matter when inherited?
This does not remove the requirements, if any, of your state of residence; Or the state in which the original owner lived.

If you plan on OCing your trusty sidearm I would suggest taking a look at the OpenCarry.org Virginia forums. All the info you need for OC in Va is there, also go look up Va laws on the VCDL website while your at it.
For OC though the biggest help will be OCDO (opencarry.org). Go read others stories on their experiences, learn where you can and can't carry in Va. and learn tips for personal protection against over zealous LEO's like carrying a voice recorder in your pocket at all times, running. This removes the "he said, she said" element in nearly all cases for you.
You are in luck though, Va. is considered a "gold star" state as you won't be hassled much at all, by residents or LEO's.
Va does not have a pistol registration requirement nor even a "stop and id" statute. I can't remember the court case but the pull quote was "The mere pressence of a firearm in and of itself does not constitute reasonable suspicion of a crime having been, being, or about to be commited."
So in essence even if there is an MWAG (man with a gun) call to police they need to have more in order to detain/search you. "why am I being detained?" and "am I free to go?" will be your best friends in any LEO encounter.

I hesitate to open carry because I am from Michigan and nobody open carries here, and it would get you a lot of police attention in Kalamazoo. Even though they may not arrest you, they would follow you.

Yep, they pretty much covered it. As long as you are legally able to own/possess the firearms you should be fine. While it's a good idea to do a bill of sale if buying or selling a gun in VA it's not required, so some people may have bought a gun and not had a receipt or bill of sale from it.
