Kimber Compact CDP II in .45ACP

Post by TBob »

I wanted a backup carry pistol to my trusty original series I Kimber SS Ultra Carry. Although I'm fond of the Ultra Carry's size, I couldn't justify another 3" M1911 to myself, so decided to go with a 4" barrel with the same grip frame as the Ultra. Being a loyal Kimber customer, that drove me to the Compact CDP II as the logical choice. Those pistols are as hard to find as hen's teeth, with up to a 6 month wait for special orders. After exhausting all local sources, I providentially found one at a good price from Nelson Tactical at Gunbroker.com, won the auction, and the Kimber arrived today. Excellent buying experience.

Many thank to Dennis at NOVA Firearms in Falls Church for handling the FFL duties locally.

Of course, once I break this bad boy in, the Ultra will become its backup. The Ultra deserves a rest after 12 years of faithful service. The Compact is only about 2 oz heavier than the Ultra (27 vs. 25 oz empty) and handles the same. It has the same excellent trigger as well, but adds Meprolight night sights. The CDP II also has a full carry melt and a nice, black KimPro II finish on the aluminum frame.

I ordered a Milt Sparks Versa Max 2, same model that I've used for my Ultra now for the its 12 years, which should arrive on Tuesday from Allan Yoast. That's another 4-5 month wait item that I found quickly. This was all obviously meant to be!

Lookin' forward to the next 12+ years with my new buddy.
