MAN'S CONCEALED HANDGUN SAVES HIM AND HIS DOG
When 3 pit bulls stage surprise attack
May 22, 2011

(KIRKLAND, WA) -- Tim Lewis of Kirkland may be thanking his lucky stars this weekend he bought that handgun, had it with him and knew how to use it Saturday when three pit bulls attacked him and his German Shepherd dog.

Kirkland Police said Lewis, who was legally carrying the firearm as a concealed carry permit holder, was playing catch with his 3-year-old German shepherd across from Juanita Bay Park, in the 9700 block of NE Juanita Drive in an area where a Seattle man had his three unleashed pit bulls nearby.

Out of the blue said Lewis the three pit bulls charged and began attacking his dog.

Both Lewis and the pit bulls' owner fought to stop the attack and at one point thought they may have stopped it but then the three pit bulls suddenly attacked again both Lewis and his dog and that is when Lewis, fearful for his own life and his dog's life, drew his handgun and fired, hitting and wounding one of the dogs and scaring off the others.

The owner of the pit bulls then rounded up the animals.........................(Continued in link)

Dogs need to be trained for obedience not ferocity.

I disagree with the statement about training dogs to be obedient and not ferocity. A well balanced dog will know when the situation requires ferocity and when the situation requires a lick. I have two dobermans, rather large dogs, and both know the difference. My female dobie is the more aggressive of the two. But even with that, she would never run over to a dog or stranger and attack. She will on command "guard" as will my male dobie. It's no different than proper gun training. Dogs are every bit as intimidating as a gun or knife esp. when they both go about 100 lbs. each, and are extremely muscular. There is a place for ferocity, but never without proper training. I believe that certain breeds are more prone for civi attacks than others, and pitbulls by nature are not killers. These were just badly trained, or worse had no obedience training. Know the breed and how to train them. Responsible dog ownership is the only way to stop these occurances, and by the way if it had been my dogs attacking without a command to, I would have shot my dogs myself.
