Springfield XDM vs Glock 19
Springfield XDM vs Glock 19
ALL,
I want to consult the gun guru's here on a purchaser's dilemma.
Here is the set up: My lady friend is looking to purchase for a handgun for home/self defense. She thinks carrying is out of the question but I know that she will once she buys. She's a regular at the gun range (even before we met, WIN!) and she's good shooter. She's very familiar with both the Springfield XDM and the Glock 19 but she is having trouble deciding which one to buy. I work in law enforcement and obviously love my Glock but she was swooped a little bit by the Springfield. Any and all thoughts, comments, concerns, and feedback is appreciated.
(Yes I have tried to talk her into higher calibers)
Thank you all,
SC

She should get what she shoots well and likes best. I quit trying to pick a gun for my wife about a year ago - one of the smarter things I've done. She ended up with two, an M&P 9 Compact and a Ruger LCP.
Competition is one of the "great levelers" of ego.

Yup, shooter chics are cool. I married one myself. It sounds like she's already shot them both, but in the off chance she hasn't, get her to rent them both at the range and go from there. I'm partial to Glocks myself, but I learned a long time ago, what baby wants, baby gets, whether its what I like or not. Give your input and leave it be. She'll decide eventually and if she ever falls out of love with it, she can't blame you.

I think the XDm, due to the cutout high in the grip, gives a smaller handed shooter a better grip.
Otherwise, I can't say much differentiates the two. Some claim the higher barrel on the XDm leads to more muzzle flip. Meh. You gain round capacity with the XDm.
Both are solid.

Both guns are good options, get the one she shoots best with (rapid fire is a plus and so is natural point of aim after drawing from a holster).
Unlike a lot of other sites, you won't find many caliber snobs around here. IMHO, 9mm is a fine choice as long as you use good HPs. There are differences between calibers, but no one caliber is all pros and no cons. For example, .45s failure mode (HP that doesn't open as intended) is better than 9mm because the nominal diameter is larger (more area = higher probability of hitting something important), but there are some stats which indicate that .45s clog more often on heavy clothing than the other common calibers. Obviously, you get fewer rounds and most people perceive the recoil of a .45 to be worse than the other options.seanc wrote:Yes I have tried to talk her into higher calibers
If it were clear cut, we wouldn't debate it. If she shoots and likes a 9mm, go for it. There's nothing wrong with it as long as you're shooting HPs.

It´s the first time I dare to give my opinion .... but as you´re asking for a lady ... there it is. Last week in Bill´s meeting, I tried the Springfield subcompact 9 mm and think it´s great to carry on, better than a revolver if you´re used to them.

I don't own a Glock or an XD, so I want to qualify my response.
Wasn't always this way, but from the current marketing standpoint, the Springfield XDM is an Apple, and the Glock is a PC. Of course, a wheel gun is the ultimate PC. But, ya know, it still has a great point and click interface.
I'm a PC guy, by the way. But in the pistol realm, I like the looks of the XD (just talking cosmetics here).
I'll repeat the sentiment of others here, get her what she shoots best and is most comfortable with carrying. but it does sound like she could be happy with either one. Both are good guns, so consider the one she was "swooped" by.

ALL,
Thank you all for the feedback. There are some great suggestions above that I plan to put in action. I'm mostly pleased that there was not anything negative about one model over the other.
Thanks!

I have an XDm and it is the best shooting pistol I've ever had my paws on. A natural pointer, great grip, high capacity, and it's a sexy looking beast. In the spirit of transparency though, I've never fired a Glock.
Corpsman up!

I was impressed! In the hands of this very capable lady , that XDSC was printing the whole mag in a group you could have covered with a mason jar lid.

And she wasn't half bad with the XD45Tac either...
