Good scope for my 10/22
Hi,
I'm about to pick up a 10/22 and this will be my first rimfire rifle. I want to put a scope on it but have no idea what is practical. I've seen a wide range of inexpensive scopes built for .22 to people putting on expensive scopes.
The rifle will be for plinking, target shooting (I don't even know what the range is for a 10/22), and for critter hunting if it ever came to that.
Thoughts?
Thanks!
Bryan

Go to walmart and pick up a inexpensive scope. Once you get comfortable with it and learn to range your targets you can switch to a better quality scope. A 10-22 will accurately shoot several hundred yards with good ammo. As for taking game, I shot a doe at 100 yards some years ago and killed her with the first shot. I used hollow points for hunting, round ball for plinking. Enjoy your new gun and don't forget to shoot it with the iron sights, sometimes you don't need a scope.
Re: Good scope for my 10/22
I have found I like a Bushnell 4X32 scope on a .22 and at about $40 it isn't too outrageously priced. I have a couple and wouldn't hesitate to buy another. The combo would be good for 75-100 yards on groundhogs. I would point out that shooting deer with a .22 caliber rifle (that includes AR-15s)is illegal in VA.

I have heard good things about those as well but I would start out with irons. You may find your more accurate than you would image.grumpyMSG wrote:I have found I like a Bushnell 4X32 scope on a .22 and at about $40 it isn't too outrageously priced. An AR would be chambered in .223 not .22 thusly why would it not be legal?I would point out that shooting deer with a .22 caliber rifle (that includes AR-15s)is illegal in VA.

I've got Mueller APVs on both of my 10/22s
Its more scope than really needed but they are a good value scope.
Both Rugers have been tweaked (a fair bit) with replacement barrels, stocks and one converted to .17Mach2.
Cheers

A .223 Remington has a .22 bore. I am sure somebody will come on here and say it is exactly .2XX, but the reality is an AR-15 can use a .22 rimfire adapter with the standard barrel. The law is about bore diameter not the round the rifle fires. There are actually a whole host of .22 centerfire rifles, .22-250 and .220 Swift to name a few more.Jakeiscrazy wrote:I have heard good things about those as well but I would start out with irons. Yeah I'm familiar with those. But all of this doesn't matter because I looked it up and it isn't .22 it's .23.grumpyMSG wrote:A .223 Remington has a .22 bore. From DGIF Website:
Pistols and revolvers are lawful for deer and bear hunting only in those counties where hunting deer and bear with rifles is lawful. Cartridges used must be .23 caliber or larger and have a manufacturer's rating of 350 foot-pounds muzzle energy or more.

Re: Good scope for my 10/22
Just so you all know who read this, I shot the deer in OK several years back. So I appreciate the knowledge having been dropped about VA laws, cuz knowledge is power........... or so I thought.
Re: Good scope for my 10/22
So I went and found it for you: SAAMI (Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute) specifications:Jakeiscrazy wrote:

http://www.saami.org/specifications_and ... ad/206.pdf
page 47 (in the PDF) in particular lists the .223 Remington with a .219 bore over the lands and .224 in the grooves. Most of the rounds considered .22 centerfires from the .218 Bee (page 41 in the PDF) to the .225 Winchester (page 48) list a .219 bore and .224 in the grooves. The .225 Winchester actually shows a little tighter in the grooves at .2235.
The dimensions for the .22 long rifle from SAAMI:
http://www.saami.org/specifications_and ... ad/208.pdf
page 20 of the PDF which is the .22 Long Rifle- Sporting shows a .22's bore over the lands at .217 and in the grooves at .222.
Remember that .22 is 22/100ths if an inch and .220 is 220/1000ths of an inch are exactly the same measurement. To meet the state's criteria you would need a .230 bore or bigger. I was slightly innaccurate about the AR statement. There are many alternative calibers available that would be legal from the 6.5 Grendel all the way up to the .450 Bushmaster and a host of them in between where you could change it by popping two pins a putting a new upper and bolt on your lower and poof a new caliber...

Re: Good scope for my 10/22
I have a Tasco Mag 3-12 IIRC on my son's Savage. It has been a great scope, stayed zeroed, and works quite nicely. I havent seen one in the stores for soem time, so it may no longer be available, but it is a great scope.

Nope read the above post. The state doesn't care about your bore they care about your caliber.grumpyMSG wrote:To meet the state's criteria you would need a .230 bore or bigger.Jakeiscrazy wrote:

Obviously, what we have here is a failure to communicate...
From the dictionary: http://www.yourdictionary.com/caliber
It's just like fishing without a license, it isn't illegal if you don't get caught. I don't encourage anybody to do it...

If I can't get through with this one, I can't do anything more to prevent the Game Warden from citing you after you killed a deer with a .223 Remington. I just wonder if it is one of those offenses that they seize your gun for?2. the diameter of the bore of a gun, usually measured in hundredths of inches or in millimeters

I'm no longer alleging that you can shoot deer with .223. I understand and expect that. But it has nothing to do with the bore of the gun. It's about the caliber your shooting.grumpyMSG wrote: Obviously, what we have here is a failure to communicate...

I'm not normally a big fan of cheap scopes, but I've had decent experiences with them, and for a situation like this, I'd probably look for a decent Simmons or maybe even a Tasco.

Re: Good scope for my 10/22
One of the biggest issues for selecting a rimfire scope is the parallax focus setting. Most factory-set scopes are set to focus parallax at 100 yards. Typical rimfire shooting is about 50 yards. This means that your aim can be several inches off for typical shooting.
Scopes marked as "rimfire" simply means the parallax is set for 50 yards instead of the 100.
Most user adjustable (AO) parallax focus scopes are in magnifications way too high for rimfire needs.
Most high-end scopes can be sent to their manufacture to have their parallax focus changed for free or nominal charge.
For my Ruger 10/22 build, I chose a Burris 2-7x Fullfield II to replace an old Simmons 3-9x. It is currently at the factory being converted to 50 yards parallax focus.
Red Dot sights (typically 1x) are also a great alternative for rimfire rifles.
I know this thread is old, but I thought the info would be good for someone doing a search.

Tasco makes a red/green dot that you can procure at Wal-mart for about $40, and does a fine job.
Just giving you an alternative to "crosshair/magnification" scopes.
I have one on my Target 10/22, but I have a red/green dot on the "walk-around" model.

Re: Good scope for my 10/22
Seems we have two discussions....
As for the topic, There is a wide range of scopes that will work good for you. First determine your price range including rings and such. Under 100 bucks you can pick up a a bushnell or simmons. I personally would get a variable power such as a 3-9x40. As where a fixed 4x32 is good enough, I like the variable option. Someone recommended the Mueller APV. As it a bit much for a 22, its probably one of the most used scopes for a 22. I have heard nothing but superb things about it for its price range ($129 i think) On my 10/22 i run a nikon buckmaster 4.5x14x40SF (overkill but it is what it is) If your on a buget, you can pick up a simmons 22 mag 3-9x32 from opticsplanet now for 20bucks. My brother has one on his 10/22 standard and it shoots better then what you pay for. After shooting it i would have guessed $80-100 quality. It sighted in easy, clear sight picture, holds zero. Not saying its better quality then Leupold by any means (which is my favorite) but he shot better at 50 yards then my buddy did who was using a 10/22 haweye with Leupold VX1
As for the deer hunting discussion. Law states .23 caliber or larger bullet diameter. .230 is larger then .223 ....just saying When you put a caliper on a .223 rem or 5.56 nato and it reads about .2235 or anything in that range and you have to open it to reach .230. its clearly under the va code of bullet diameter .23 or larger

Ok, the .223 round is not legal for hunting deer in Va. I used to be a Va. Game Warden and trust me, I know.

A good, cheap scope for the 10/22 is the Barska 3-9x40mm available on Amazon. I had one on my 10/22 for 6 months before switching it out with a Nikon ProStaff 4-12x40mm BDC reticle.

I absolutely don't understand the whole .223 convo. It made zero sense in the context of the thread.TacticalTedcom wrote:Ok, the .223 round is not legal for hunting deer in Va. I used to be a Va. Game Warden and trust me, I know.
