Kel Tec P11

Post by wbtrunx »

I picked up this little guy at the recent show in Fredericksburg. I bought the Hogue grip, finger extensions, and a second mag from Rick at All In General.
I greatly miss my 1911, but this gun fits well in my medium sized hands (the the finger extension), conceals alot more easily, and the hogue grip makes it feel oh so comfortable. Yes, unfortunately, it did tear on the back left side from me not being careful while putting it on, but I might need to trim it a little around the mag release anyway.
It doesn't seem to interfere, but just to be safe, I probably will.

I haven't been able to get it out to the range yet, but hopefully sometime this weekend I will.
The next step is to find a good iwb holster for it. The belt clips Kel Tec makes for their guns seems pretty good,
but for a little more, I can get a nice kydex holster.

I need to find which JHP it likes to feed on, too. I've heard of every different one available reccomended, so we'll have to see what we can do.

Hey, this is my 100th post! Hooah!

Nice. I like that. I'm also in the market for a small carry gun. Am still trying to decide between 380 and 9mm. I'll probably go with a 9 since I already have one. Otherwise I'll be faced to scrounge more ammo.

Yeah, if you've got a 9mm, I'd say stick with that. It keeps things easier in several ways.
Kahr makes some nice small pistols, but about $150-$200 more than Kel Tec (for the cheap Kahr's).
Kel Tec sells night sights for $85, so you can get a P11 with night sights for under $400. Down the
road I might get some, but for now, I'm good.

I have a ruger LCP and love it. Nice and light can use pocket holster or an ankle holster without any trouble.

and judging from the gun show this weekend, .380 ammo is nearly impossible to find.

The LCP seems to be a newer copy of the K3AT.

The thing I don't like about the 3AT is that it doesn't lock open after the last round.
A buddy has the Ruger, and it just seems a little too small. So both are out for me.
I'd rather go with a Bersa .380 (PPK knock off) if I was going for that round.

I had a P-11. My first "carry gun." I think I had two jams the first time I shot it, out of a box of "range reloads" of unknown quality. After that, it never bobbled with a steady diet of WWB, Rem-UMC, Blazer Brass, and American Eagle 9mm FMJ (about 1500 rounds total). The only HP's I used in it were Rem-UMC 115 gr. They worked just as well as FMJ as far as I could tell.

I eventually traded it off for something else, like I always do. :)

One thing. They do kick a bit. Fifty rounds was about my limit. Anymore than that, and my arm/wrist would tingle for days. Also they're not target guns. With the long D/A trigger, and the short sight radius, I found they were short range guns. About ten yards was as far as I even tried. YMMV.

Thanks for the info. I think I will stick with a sub 9 since I already have a Berreta. Long shots aren't as issue since I only want one for carry and close encounters.

I knew this getting into the gun, but thanks for the heads up anyway.

I'll be getting a more range friendly gun down the line.

I love mine. I did have the ejector brake after about 200 rounds but I called Kel-Tec and they sent one out, no questions asked except "where do we send the new one?" It installed easily and I shortened it by about 1/8". I will test it well the next time I head out to the range. I suspect the Pro Mag magazine I bought hit the ejector and broke when I slammed the magazine home. The Pro Mag sticks up a bit higher than the factory mag just under the ejector and that is what I suspect caused the issue.

I've heard bad reports about pro-mag.
All In General Tactical carries the factory (Mec-Gar) mag which is better quality.

Please understand. The only reason I "had" one, is because I saw something I wanted more. (I'm a constant gun trader.) There was nothing at all wrong with the P-11. It was just the one I was most willing to part with at that time. They're darn good little guns that do the job they're made for better than anything else in their price range.
