Looking for a place to go shooting

Post by mrbladedude »

I live in hampton roads VA. Im tired of going to indoor ranges. I want to go out in the woods and hang up ballons and bottles with coolaid, shoot watermelons and make my own targets etc and go shoot my 12 GA and my 9mm. Anywhere like this around my area?

Good luck! Unless you own some land or know someone who does, I don't know of anywhere around here to do that.

Lafayette Gun Club in York County has an outdoor range, but no balloons or watermelons allowed. Same for the outdoor gun range at the Chickahominy outdoor range.

My uncle used to own a farm just outside of Suffolk where I could shoot to my heart's content when I was growing up. However, he sold it to a movie outfit, and now it's a housing subdivision.

The outdoor range at Lafayette does allow you to shoot things other than paper, but there are some restrictions on glass and metal (other than cans). Still not the same as shooting in the back yard. You can't just sit stuff on the ground due to the baffles, except at the back berm, which is 50 or 100 yards. I think there is one lane set up for patterning shotguns, but no general shooting of shot shells, except at clays.
