QQ 38 short rounds... where to find online

Post by kanata67 »

Quick Question. apparently I have a breech 38 short 5 round revolver. Where can I find rounds for it online? I ask online as I'm in FL so local to most of you does me little good. I've asked around and from the gun I describe they try to sell me 32's, which it is not, or 38 special... which it is also not. I ask for 38 short and wally world and the local gun shops just give me a confused look. Any help/advise?

Did a quick google search on 38 short, as I'm unfamiliar with the round. So, is it a .38 short Colt? If so, referring to it as that, instead of 38 short, will give you opportunity to educate others instead of just confuse them. Apparently the .38 short Colt came before the .38 long Colt and .38 special. Many will be familiar with these rounds, so that will give some context when you're asking about the round.
The google search also showed several online stores selling .38 short Colt ammo.
Good luck.

I think you may want .38 S&W rounds, as seen at the following link. I, too, am unfamiliar with the round that you're talking about - just trying to help out.

unfortunately out of stock right now, but gives you something to search for anyway. Also, I may be wrong, but the only .38 caliber pistol rounds that I know of are .38 SPL (Revolver), .38 Super Auto (Auto loaders only) and .38 S&W (Revolver). So, process of elimination puts me on the link above as matching your needs.

[edit] newdovo's post about .38 short Colt ... hmmm

http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-antiqu ... -colt.html

This link says .38 Short Colt and .38 S&W are interchangeable for short-cylinder .38 revolvers.

difinately a short round. A round from my 38 special is the right diameter but does not sleeve the whole way in. Even if it did it would be longer than the rotating cylinder. 38 s&w I assume as the gun is an old iver-johnson, not a colt. Just need to find a place that has them in stock now.

I think I've seen .38 S&W on the shelf at Green Top. But really, it's an obsolete round that you're not usually going to find in a brick and mortar shop - you have a much better chance finding it online. (Which is not to say that you will, just that your options are much less limited.)

You might also want to consider taking the pistol by an experienced gunsmith, who can determine what the caliber is, exactly.

Stopped by the small local shop I get online orders transferred to and forgot to bring the pistol with me, as always. Chatting with him about it he said the s&w will work with colt but not the reverse. As it's an Iver he said 38 CBC spl short... of which he just happened to have 1 box of. Brought it home and they fit perfect. $37 for a box of 50. Haven't fired any through it yet and I don't know when I will get to a place I can shoot anytime soon. At least 3 other guns I haven't fired yet either so when I finally do go it should be fun, and expensive.

I have had many of the break top revolver's in 38 S&W short. They are all mostley the cheap Iver Johnson's that you will find out there.

Caution note - most of them are so old that the innards are worn and they lean towards haveing timeing problems. If you don't know how to check for proper timeing then please do not fire it untill you get someone that KNOWS what they are doing to go over the weapon. A break top like this was a popular weapon back in the 20's and 30's as a pocket weapon and every Farmer had several of them around the barn or house for 2 legged and 4 legged varmint's during the depression. If the timeing is off it can shave lead and take out an eye or cause other damage to your head that you do not want.

I appreciate the tips. Got three fire-arms from the nice old lady next door. Rhom 22short prostitute pistol, iver 38 short, and iver 16gauge breach goose gun. The shot is in museum quality condition with original carry sack from 18 and the 38short was close to mint. The rohm was well... a real pretty rohm, Both pistols given to me loaded mind you. No choice but to fire off the ammo older than I am just to get rid of it. Iver worked just fine. Rohm did to, but don't you just hate when you stick a 22lr in a 22short revolver and have to uncase a chambered round  . I kinda like my non antique fire-arms that come with directions.
