Concealed Carrying with Florida CWP

Post by BuckHijo »

I will be moving to Chesapeake in a month from Cali and I have a Florida Resident CWP, I'm in the military, and I plan on carrying the moment I get into VA using my Florida CWP since VA is a reciprocal state. My question is should I carry some sort of proof that my FL CWP is valid in case I get pulled over for some reason or would most PD's in VA know my FL CWP allows me to carry in VA. I CCed in SC when I was stationed there with my FL CWP but I never had any run ins with the Police. I do plan on getting my VA CWP but I am to impatient to wait for it to come in to start carrying. Thanks for the help.

You shouldn't need to carry anything else. Just make sure you have the permit with you....and get it changed to a non-resident permit.

You should be fine as long as your resident FL permit is still valid.

I presume the resident status would still be valid because of your military status? If I read that correctly, you have FL resident status, a FL resident permit, live in CA currently and was previously stationed in SC?

I suspect that Florida is your home-of-record state. I don't know of any reason why you can't retain your Florida resident CC permit and obtain a VA CC resident permit after you move here, so long as you remain active military.

there is no difference between Resident and non-resident in FL...other than to give FL the change of address.

Besides...being in the military...isn't FL still his home anyway???

Precisely, and there's the difference - by giving Florida an out of state address, there are some states that won't accept the permit now since the OP would no longer be a Florida resident. (http://licgweb.doacs.state.fl.us/news/c ... carry.html)

The OP stated that he was "moving" and made reference to previosly being "stationed" in SC.

If he is moving his home to Va, then he should change the address on his permit and will no longer be a resident of Florida. If he is being stationed in Va as part of his military orders, then he should be able to keep his Florida permit as is since Florida would remain as his home state. A call to the Florida Dept. of Agriculture should provide him with a better answer.

First off thanks for the help everyone. I should have made it more clear, I am being stationed in VA so I will keep my residency in FL so I won't have to change anything on my FL CWP. Since I am military I will also be able to obtain a VA permit as well which I will be doing. Again thanks for the help, can't wait to get to the great state of VA and out of Cali and away from the West coast.

You'll love the state of Virginia and you don't need to do a thing regarding your permit.
