Beretta PX4 Storm Subcompact
Beretta PX4 Storm Subcompact
Hi folks,
I have searched the site and could not find any information on the PX4 Storm Subcompact. Since I currently carry one, I thought I would post some information about the gun. Enjoy!
I acquired the PX4 Storm Subcompact approximately around Thanksgiving, 2010. So far, I have had one round of ammunition not properly shuffled into the barrel. I believe that it was operator error, as well. And I have put close to 600 rounds through the handgun so far. First and foremost, this gun is a gem. It has been reliable and, after the break in period, I have been able to shoot 3 inch groups from 15 yards. Not to bad considering it has a 3 inch barrel (and 19 mm of that is shell casing). It has a capacity of 13+1, which does add significant weight to the gun; however, fully loaded it is still my daily CC. Recoil is also smooth. I suspect Beretta put quite a bit of money into developing this firearm.
Now for the cons. So far, I have found that there is a short list for the cons for this pistol. It does have a high price tag (I paid close to $650) but I believe it is worth the money (since it is a Beretta). Also, since you have the capacity for 13 rounds of ammunition, the handle is extended considerably. This can produce an irregular shape in a light jacket or vest that would cause notice to a LEO or someone on the lookout. To the average person, it would probably not be noticed. Major con: this pistol produces a pronounced muzzle flash on each shot. I could imagine this being a hindrance in a low lit situation or darkness and having to fire the pistol. You might be blinded for a second or two. Lastly, this is the dirtiest gun I have ever seen. Even after just a few rounds, it looks as though it has not been cleaned, ever.
Overall: I would give this handgun an A-. It is reliable, practical, concealable, and a pleasure to shoot. I would recommend this pistol to anyone.
Take care!

Good review and honest. I have heard the the PX series tends to have a little sideways wiggle when shooting. So instead of going straight back it almost flips off to the side. This claim have any truth to it in your opinion?

In my opinion, I did not observe this while I have had this pistol. I will pay attention the next time at the range and find out for sure.Jakeiscrazy wrote:Good review and honest. Re: Beretta PX4 Storm Subcompact
Just purchased a PX4 Subcompact in .40... I wanted something small but with power. I have two comments on this gun. I have large hands and have found the grip a bit short for my liking. I like the gun as far as its quality but sure would like to find a magazine that would extend the grip about an inch more... as is available for the XD Subcompact .40 (I own one of those also) the larger magazine in the XD makes it perfect IMHO. Does anyone know if there are larger magazines available for this particular weapon? I might mention that someone told me the magazine for the standard PX4 .40 would fit, but do they have one that has the collar around it at the bottom like the XD version?
Second comment. I have found that as mentioned above... there seems to be a bit of 'wobble' when firing... I guess that is the only way I can describe it. I suppose I am holding the gun wrong or need to adjust my hold on it in some manner. I have found it a bit difficult to control with only two fingers on the grip... my pinky drops below the mag and seems to have an effect on my accuracy... I am working on it but sure would like to find a longer magazine. If one is not readily available now... I would bet that it will be soon enough as I have talked to a couple of other owners at the range and this is about the only thing they would like to change with this little gun.
I might offer my opinion on one other aspect... I have found the recoil of this gun "seems" to be more than the PT145 Taurus .45 but that may be due to the fact that the Taurus grip is longer and I am able to hold it more firmly, with all fingers on the grip.
So, other than the above, I really like this gun as a very concealable and powerful subcompact. I like the trigger also, very crisp. I smile when I remember what was said about another post concerning adjusting the trigger on a Beretta... I think the term was 'blasphemy"....

Magazine extensions so the little finger can wrap around are common.

Re: Beretta PX4 Storm Subcompact
I thought they were also, but no one seems to know for sure on this particular gun. I have searched but so far have found nothing that is specific to the PX4 Storm, subcompact .40. I checked 3 shops in Richmond and the person I talked to in each... said... "don't have it and not sure if it's available", so I figured this site would be the best place to ask.zephyp wrote:Magazine extensions so the little finger can wrap around are common.

Re: Beretta PX4 Storm Subcompact
Does anyone ever feel totally confused on gun talk???? I think I just found out some very pertinent information related to this thread and my question in particular...
I was a bit upset because although I love this weapon... the grip was not to my total liking.... well,,, guess what... it's not as bad as I thought and considerably better than it could be...and if I had only read and looked and searched a bit more, I would have answered my own question and solved a simple problem.
This is a great little gun, plenty of power (mine is a .40) well constructed, operates very well and is quite concealable. My concern was only the grip not being quite long enough for my hand... well, guess what... I will admit to being just plain stupid on this one... the little clip deal on the forward edge of one of the mags included in the box..... 'snaps' downward thus providing a slight bit more area for my pinky finger... which happens to be the difference between nite and day in my shooting... that was all I needed and I wasted all this time and effort trying to find longer magazines when all I had to do was "see" what was already there...
In addition to this simple fact and in with the other assorted accessories are several interchangeable grip inserts that will allow this little 'subcompact' to replace the short mag with a standard mag and all with the simple changing of the grips. Beretta saw this coming and provided the answer... it only took a halfway intelligent person to see this... and since I have only recently joined that particular group... I now stand corrected and have found all the answers I was seeking.
Thanks for all the input not only here but in several phone calls and PM's I got trying to straighten me out on the apparent dilemma. I will try to do better in the future... I actually do know how to read... comprehension seems to be my only problem.

Re: Beretta PX4 Storm Subcompact
The thing on the mag bottom is called a "snap grip". I saw in your post you needed another inch on the mag. I thought you already knew about the snap grip, and had REALLY big hands.
Glad you got it figured out.
Oh, I have one myself, and love it.
Enjoy

Re: Beretta PX4 Storm Subcompact
Good review. I had a chance to fondle one at the Rockingham gun show last weekend. Unfortunately it was the one with the manual safety, and the positioning of it felt very poor. However I liked the heft and balance of it. Sounds like a good pistol!
