An influential group of 15 organizations is trying to overturn what many see as one of the last vestiges of the "blue laws" of old--the ban or restrictions several states still have on Sunday hunting.
Coalition members include the National Shooting Sports Foundation, National Rifle Association, Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation, Safari Club International, National Assembly of Sportsmen's Caucuses, U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance and the Wildlife Management Institute.
Eleven East Coast states, from South Carolina to Maine, still have restrictions on hunting on Sunday. Six states, including Virginia, have complete bans, although Virginia does allow licensed shooting preserves to operate on Sundays.
Details of the initiative were announced yesterday at the annual Shooting, Hunting and Outdoors Trade Show in Las Vegas.
Proponents of overturning the ban said that states prohibiting Sunday hunting limited opportunities for current hunters; made it difficult to recruit new ones; and hurt opportunities to generate conservation funds via collections such as the Pittman-Robertson excise tax, which has returned more than $3 billion to habitat and conservation management since 1991.

There have been efforts to get the ban lifted in every session for at least the last ten years. They always fail. It'll probably fail this year too.
Hunting is a dying sport.

That may be true but we still need to keep the presure on.Diomed wrote:There have been efforts to get the ban lifted in every session for at least the last ten years. They always fail. It'll probably fail this year too.

Re: Sunday Hunting Banned -- WOW!!
What I could never grasp is the idea that hunting on a Sunday is any different than any other day,,,Or are the churches afraid folks will play hookie to go out and go deer hunting instead?

Re: Sunday Hunting Banned -- WOW!!
Some churches would lose their preacher on sundays. The church my wife works at, the minister is a deer hunting fool, he's more eaten up with it than I am. My wife rarely see's him during deer season except when he stops by to show off his deer.VBshooter wrote:What I could never grasp is the idea that hunting on a Sunday is any different than any other day,,,Or are the churches afraid folks will play hookie to go out and go deer hunting instead?
Now I'm not bashing any religon but as long as Va. is in the bible belt there will not be any sunday hunting. I know too many southern baptist that believe sunday is only for going to church and getting drunk afterwards.

Re: Sunday Hunting Banned -- WOW!!
Yep,
Vahunter is 100% correct on the reason for no Sunday Hunting. Heck, in South Carolina it used to be illegal for stores to be open on Sunday (Called the Blue law).

Need to begin a whispering campaign among them Baptist preachers to make them realize the hubby will be out of the house hunting when he does a Sunday visitation. THAT ought to take the edge off'n their missionary zeal to keep us all in church on Sunday.

Yep, Virginia used to have the blue law as well. That is what gives me hope that the Sunday prohibition against hunting will one day be lifted as well.mroyal98 wrote:Yep,

When is was stationed in Ft. Benning, Georgia they would not sell beer on sundays. If i forgot to buy some the night before i'd have to drive a few miles to cross into alabama just to buy beer before football started. I recently made a trip down there and its still in effect. (Post would sell on sundays but where i lived off post it was just quicker to hop the boarder)mroyal98 wrote:Yep,

I AM A CHRISTIAN AND BELIEVE THAT WE, AND I MEAN US AND THE CRITTERS, SHOULD ALL HAVE A DAY OF REST. I LOVE TO HUNT AND BE OUTSIDE BUT A DAY MUST BE SET ASIDE TO REST AND WORSHIP.
I AM A BAPTIST ALSO SO TAKE YOUR SHOTS BUT IF WE WERE ALL PERFECT WE WOULDN'T NEED TO BE FORGIVEN NOW WOULD WE.

Re: Sunday Hunting Banned -- WOW!!
Agreed, but is the civil government really the proper mechanism for enforcing that day of rest?SECONDSWAMP wrote:I AM A CHRISTIAN AND BELIEVE THAT WE, AND I MEAN US AND THE CRITTERS, SHOULD ALL HAVE A DAY OF REST. I LOVE TO HUNT AND BE OUTSIDE BUT A DAY MUST BE SET ASIDE TO REST AND WORSHIP.

You can force someone to "convert" at the point of a sword, but that does no good. You just end up causing resentment by others and the convert really isn't one is it? It also put the civil government in a place of messing with the church...that goes both ways. If the civil government has the power to enforce a day or rest for hunting, why not mandatory church attendance? History shows it goes the other way too. If the civil government can enforce the statues of the church they tend to start imposing on the church too. Pretty soon you have a state sponsored church and you have to be protestant or catholic or whatever. It doesn't work and it isn't glorifying to God. A forced day of rest is no better than a forced tithe or one given for other earthly reasons.
Violation of the Sabbath is a violation of the law of God, but it should not also be a violation of civil statues. The sword can not enforce morality and whenever it is tried the results are disastrous. E.g. Prohibition. If you don't think the civil government is a sword, go break one of its laws (hunt on Sunday).

Your beliefs are your's they are not mine and do not try and tell me that I must observe your's. My Sunday's are for me to do whatever I wish to do, hunt, fish ,target shoot. or just lay around and do nothing or spend time with my family and or friends.SECONDSWAMP wrote:I AM A CHRISTIAN AND BELIEVE THAT WE, AND I MEAN US AND THE CRITTERS, SHOULD ALL HAVE A DAY OF REST. As a proclaimed Christian, you should be aware that the day that was set aside as a day of rest (the Sabbath day) was actually Saturday (the seventh day of the week which was the day that God rested after the creation). You should also be aware that the Sabbath day was abolished when Christ was nailed to the cross.SECONDSWAMP wrote:I AM A CHRISTIAN AND BELIEVE THAT WE, AND I MEAN US AND THE CRITTERS, SHOULD ALL HAVE A DAY OF REST. Having said that, I will now step down from the pulpit and say that if you wish to rest on Sunday it is fine with me. If you wish to hunt, fish, work, or play on Sunday, it is also fine with me. I do not appreciate others trying to tell me what to do with my weekends, and I would certainly never try to tell anyone else what to do with theirs. Whether I go to Church or not is between me and my maker.
On a final note, please be mindful of the caps lock. Many people tend to take all capitals as shouting. Since we are all friends here, I am sure that was not your intention.

Re: Sunday Hunting Banned -- WOW!!
I agree there should be NO LAW against sunday hunting but where I grew up in Florida it was just a matter of respect not to fire weapons on sunday. I don't know if hunting was or was not legal there/then as I was mostly concerned with shooting varmints.

New York having one thing better than Virginia ? Perrish the thought!
Now the only reason New York has hunting on Sunday is because it's a Godless state
being run by Godless liberals........ any other questions?
Re: Sunday Hunting Banned -- WOW!!
You are correct, sir, that the laws of the sabbath were nailed to the cross with our savior, and Christ made that very clear when He walked this earth (usually choosing the sabbath day to perform miracles). To clarify, the reason Christians choose the first day of the week to meet is, for one, Christ arose on the first day, and because this is the day that the bible records the meeting of the Church Christ started (Acts 20:7-8)Yarddawg wrote:

This said, I see no reason to ban Sunday hunting. This is something that is a conscience of the individual issue, and not a something that the government should be involved in.

And to those of us that do not subscribe to a X-tian belief system this seems to be a wasted opportunity to drop another "blue" law from the booksChrisBond wrote:Yarddawg wrote:This said, I see no reason to ban Sunday hunting. Re: Sunday Hunting Banned -- WOW!!
I, too, am a Christian. Some Christians celebrate a traditional Saturday Sabbath, so should we ban Saturday hunting too? Should we ban hunting on high holy days? What about thanksgiving? What about Jewish holidays? I could go on and on and on but what's the point?
New York's highest court struck down Sunday Blue Laws as unconstitutional. For once, I agree. We should not impose our beliefs on those whose beliefs differ from ourselves. Legislation of morality is tyranny. Time to let this one go.
