5.56x45mm Mk318 SOST Terminal Ballistics

I've searched and could not find this info anywhere yet, so this might become quite a popular post. :first:

I used a wax like product called "The Bullet Test Tube." Their website is here: http://www.thebullettesttube.com/

The test tube is not tissue, nor is it ordinance gel. This whole test is not scientific. There is no statistical significance to these results. However, they do provide a estimate of what a bullet can do and what mechanisms it uses to damage tissue. Here are two notes from the manufacturer:
How does the Bullet Test Tube compare to animal tissue?
The short answer is we do not know and it really does not matter.

The long answer is that it is a scientific impossibility to duplicate animal tissue. This is easy to understand when you consider the variety of different tissues a bullet must pass thru as it penetrates an animal such as hide, cartilage, bone, fat, muscle and soft organs. And, when you consider the differences in tissue from animal to animal. A claim that any bullet testing material replicates animal tissue is misleading and ultimately unsubstantiated.

That said, the expansion material inside the Bullet Test Tube and Xtenders does offer a reliable and consistent means for comparing bullets by exposing them to similar stresses and resistances that they will encounter inside animals. Bullets recovered from animals bear a remarkable resemblance to bullets recovered from the Bullet Test Tube. More-so than we have found with any other bullet testing media. The Bullet Test Tube and Xtenders were not designed to test animal tissue, they were designed to test bullets and offer a Total Understanding of Bullet Expansion.

Are the results comparable to ordnance gelatin?
Yes, in some ways. With regard to penetration you can multiply the penetration depth in the Bullet Test Tube by 1.34 to make a relatively accurate prediction of how the bullet would have penetrated inside ordnance gelatin. However, ordnance gelatin does not offer a reliable means for measuring the wound cavity bullets create. And, ordnance gelatin offers a great visual exaggeration of the affects of what has been called the “temporary stretch cavity”.

With the Bullet Test Tube you can physically measure the volume of the “wound cavity” which is the actual material physically displaced by the penetration and expansion of the bullet thru its entire depth of travel.

I would also add that unlike living tissue, a wax like substance does not collapse back after bullet travel. I.e. the temporal cavity is overstated and appears like perminate tissue damage. In my experience you can see this when the wax is smooth like rather than ragged. Large temporal cavities don't really mean anything. Unless the tissue is stretched fast enough to rip, no real damage is done.

All tests were done at 15 yards out of a DDM4V3 rifle (16" barrel AR15). Unfortunately, my chrono was acting up and I was not able to check the velocity of these rounds. However, given this is such an ad hoc test...it doesn't really matter IMHO. I plan on doing a quick accuracy test and hopefully will get velocity data then.

Observations
This round exited and was not recovered. I put a telephone book behind the next one. The wound appears to be a perminate cavity due to the presence of fragmented lead and the rough texture of the wax which suggests tearing. The neck length is increadibly short! This bullet doesn't appear to require yaw fragment. Penetration was excellent!

Shot 2
The bullet again penetrated the entire tube, but a phone book caught the round. It penetrated approx. 1" into the phone book which was 2ft behind the end of the tube.

very good write up, the results are pretty good, It would be cool if you had an old windshield or other type barrier to shoot through into the tubes.

Thought the same thing, but didn't have anything. The results are not scientific and I admit it. Most of the testing on the Internet is BS, but I don't have a problem with it as long as you admit what it is. I did them because I was curious and wanted to get some insight into how these rounds worked. I fired some M855 rounds for controls which I'll post here soon.
