NORFOLK -- Students are asking to bring guns on campus, after a wave of crime near Old Dominion University.

Labor Day weekend, two people were robbed on or near the campus.

Some ODU students started a Facebook page, demanding the right to carry concealed handguns on school property.

One post reads, "We have the right to protect ourselves, especially in the high crime areas near ODU."

ODU, like all Virginia and North Carolina colleges, bans or restricts weapons on campus.

Freshman Meghan Nagle says firearms at school could distract students from learning.

"I'm always going to be wondering, who has a gun? I don't know if they're going to freak out and kill me."

But even crowded bars allow people to come in with hidden guns.
Sophomore Nick Foxx believes that right should extend to college campuses.

"People who obey the law and go through the permit system should be able to carry their guns anywhere."

Most students are too young to carry. In Virginia, you have to be 21 years old to get a concealed handgun permit.

Virginia Tech still prohibits handguns at school, even after the massacre that killed 32 people.

Universities in Utah and Colorado that allow guns on campus have not reported acts of violence.

ODU, what a dump. Spent 6 years there. Crappy neighborhoods surround the campus. I delivered pizzas in that area for Chanello's. I've seen more crappy houses and people on welfare and more drug dealers than I care to remember.

Toured with the son, and there were a lot of police on the street during open house. He ended up going elsewhere.

Wouldn't want to go there but I would want to carry if I did. BTW the author forgot about open carry.

Odu is what it is, good school surrounded by several areas in decline, not to mention its know as a party scxhool and the kids that go there spend more time drunk then the better schools

Very small area around Odu that you can open carry, and have to be carefull of not stepping into or on the campus proper

I go to ODU and open carry every day near campus. I can't think of a single street around the campus buildings owned by ODU. The exterior sidewalks (those bordering public streets) are not campus either. I don't party and hardly drink.

I wasn't a member of that facebook group until the article, but I don't particularly support its description, and there is incorrect information on its page. I'd much rather see "Students for LAWFUL CARRY" as someone wrote on the wall.

There's an open carry event coming up near ODU soon too. Hopefully supporters will come out.
