Applying for CHP question

Post by krenn72 »

I just purchased a firearm in the state of VA and would like to get a CHP.

There's a part that says, "Obtaining or previously having held a license to carry a firearm in this Commonwealth or a locality thereof, unless such license has been revoked for cause." I have a CHP for the state of PA. I was wondering if this would fulfill this requirement? I'm hoping this would be enough and that I would not have to take a training course.

Well, if your PA permit is current, I wouldn't *think* the training would be required, but crazier things have happened...

I would suggest considering the Utah permit, depending on where you think you're likely to travel. It's good in even more states than our own (we're working on that), including VA.

PA has no training requirement for a carry permit. VA does have a training requirement for a CHP even though it's ridiculously weak in my opinion. Hence, I think you will need to document training. Here is a link outlining VA's requirements:

I've even heard that all the training can be done online, so you won't even have to visit a range to demonstrate proficiency. (Judging by the way people drive around here, I'm thinking that the DMV has taken up a similar policy :hysterical: )

I had no formal training. I got my permit using my Hunter Education Certificate. IIRC the Hunter Ed class was free, and they're running them across the state now.
