Too much government?

Post by Chasbo00 »

Health inspectors shut down 7-year-old's lemonade stand; Demand $120 for license...

"...entrepreneur was a 7-year-old named Julie Murphy. Her business was a lemonade stand at the Last Thursday monthly art fair in Northeast Portland. The government regulation she violated? Failing to get a $120 temporary restaurant license.

Turns out that kids' lemonade stands -- those constants of summertime -- are supposed to get a permit in Oregon, particularly at big events that happen to be patrolled regularly by county health inspectors."

Just another instance of the overkill steriliaztion of the people all these anal retentive jerk wads try to instill... Seat belts , helmets, can;t leave a little kid to be a kid is absolute BS and the Health Inspector could use a good swift kick. Far too much of this garbage going on around the nation,,seems thsoe that would push for that crap have forgotten that we are human and don;t need our every action monitored, licensced or in any other way intruded upon.

Regulations by definition are used so that those enforcing the laws can not interject their own judgement.

It is just like that link Taggure posted about the ICE union voting no confidence in the administrators. The regulations/policy says they have to release illegals (per the political agenda) and they have no judgement i the matter. They hate it, but if they want to keep their job, they must do it.

Very similar to mandatory minimum sentencing, the intent is to remove a judges discretion during sentencing. It is a dangerous path to follow as it creates a unaccountable system. No one can be held accountable because they are just executing the rules. I posted that duck story a while back, same thing.
novasig, here is a good story why I think you might be optimistic. Just found this.

Unlucky Ducks

I once worked as a software contractor for a state agency (forgive me). The building where I worked was not your typical government building. It had a modern feel, with a decorative moat detailing the front entrance. The front door — guarded, of course — was accessible via a walkway bridge of sorts.

It's not what you may be thinking; it was all very subtle and nice. However, the drop from the bridge to the mulch-covered, bush-laden moat was a good three feet.

One year, at the beginning of spring, a duck built a nest in the moat, under one of the many bushes. As her ducklings hatched and grew, it came time for them to search for water. However, despite their repeated attempts, the ducklings could not jump from the moat to the walkway bridge.

One of the employees in the building asked the building manager if he (the employee) could place a wooden ramp to allow the ducklings to waddle out of the moat. Being a good state employee himself, the building manager called the state department of natural resources for guidance. The answer: since ducks are migratory birds, no one could do anything.

The next morning, someone plastered official signs around the entrance, stating that any attempt to help the ducks was a violation of law. No ramp, no water, no food. And violators — you know this already — would be prosecuted to the fullest extent.

Soon we had a real scene. The mother duck would leave the moat and encourage her ducklings to follow. They couldn't, of course. She would march back and forth on the walkway bridge and quack in desperation. All the while, the guard at the entrance stood watch, stopping any attempt to help.

Repeated calls to the bureaucrats at the department of natural resources were answered by a repetition of laws and fines. And not one of the department employees was going to go against the rules, or even ask for an exemption, for any reason.

The ducklings died days later.

There you have it: upon joining the state, the department of resource folks — folks who likely dreamed of careers helping wildlife — became staunch bureaucrats enforcing rules over reason.

Edit: Yes, it is way to much government. The societal organization system we call government can not solve all types or classes of problems. Like all tools, they only work well when you used them within their constraints.

No they didn't. The regulations were clear. She set up an illegal restaurant. Thems be the rules.

The line was crossed long before that by interjecting government where it doesn't belong.

Although the below video was originally done for privacy related issues (by the ACLU no less), it's where we are heading with too much government and Obamacare.

Ah yes. Point the finger. Pin the rose. Assign responsibility...

Lets blame the voters and their parents for not raising them better. Dont forget about the school system, media, current legislators, past legislators, the health department, the health inspector, the girl, her parents, the store where they bought the lemons, etc, etc, etc...

That ACLU video is a good one. How many here are over 50. Remember what it was like 40 years ago. Think what it will be 40 years from now.

An isolated incident like this is nothing. Take this with everything else going on and it is far too much.

I am quivering with anticipation regarding 2 November. I want to see the new twits get voted in and what they add to all of this...
No more catchy slogans for me...I am simply fed up...4...four...4...2+2...

It will be very interesting to see who prevails in November,,,Then it will be time for them to put up. No BS about it... They will need to start getting the country on track or get out.. People can longer sit on their hands while politicains pick their pockets and disregard their voices, The loafers, dead beats, and entitlment grabbing crowd that voted the current group of thieves into office, need to be shown the doo, given a job application, and be informed in no uncertain terms "The free ride is over"!!!!!!!

I agree but one of the points I've been trying to make is the only recourse we presently have is wait 2 or4 or 6 years and go through it again. We the people need a no kidding way to hold our government's feet to the fire and expect immediate expulsion if they are corrupt...

I absolutely agree with you on that... Some states at least have recall and I would love to see them use it against these clowns.. It would have been great if the founders had thrown in a screw up and get canned clause.. It is almost humorous when Congress talks of an ethics panel.. Yeah right, the fox gaurding the hen house doesn;t do a whole lot for me.. I know that during the campaign portion of the upcoming election it will help to constantly remind the chosen candidates of exactly what we expect from them.. Its not foolproof by any means but it will at least convey a hint to them that they are going to be held accountable and they are not royalty as a far too many of them think they are and we;ve allowed them to think that way by not nailing their sorry butts sooner. If anything positive is coming out of the current administration is the fact that a whole lot more people are paying attention , getting educated, and know what's going on than any time I can remember.
