National Ammo Shortage Is Suspicious

Alan at gunlaws.org thinks that the National Ammo Shortage Is Suspicious. Read on

Call me skeptical, but something doesn't smell right about the length and
severity of the ammo shortage in America. We're not short of ammo, we're
out. Since November. This is the end of April. WalMart shelves are bare.
Big 5 Sports here in Phoenix got its weekly truck and it had 3 boxes of
.38s (150 rounds), no 9mm, no .357, no .380, no .45. Dealers I've asked
uniformly say their orders are just not being filled, and they get no word
on what or when they'll get more.

Anyone with DIRECT connections to ammo makers is encouraged to ask
questions, get names, and let me know what you hear. I've seen the
unsubstantiated rumors on the web that there's a conspiracy, but the talk
sounds wacky and the parts don't make sense. Why would for-profit companies
voluntarily cut back production in hard economic times when demand has
exploded?

That said, note that most American gun owners are not short of ammo. They
have plenty socked away. They just can't buy more, or replace supplies used
at the range and elsewhere. The situation is most acute however for
newcomers, of which there are hundreds of thousands scared into buying
their first gun, who learn quickly that a new gun without some shells isn't
much of a good deal.

Also note that this panic/obsessive buying is a shot across the bow for
the temperature of America -- what would it take to trigger similar runs on
supplies of toilet paper, bottled water, tobacco, liquor, batteries, light
bulbs, canned goods, coffee, medicines and any other commodities people
depend upon. If ammo, a minor niche product is any gauge, we live in
delicate times.

Never fear. A friend of mine in NOVA is checking into selling ammo over the net. He thinks he will solve the problem of shortages and price gouging.

He called me today and wanted to know if this venture would fly, he's talking about stocking 100K of ammo. I told him it would work BUT first he had to get the ammo. He has a welding and steel buisness up there and since I got him hooked on guns he's become almost obsessed.

I'm Suspicious, this situation just doesn't make sense.

I went to the wal mart in Altavista yesterday to buy some tomato plants and I checked out sporting goods like I always do, the shelves where bare, empty. There was no ammo, just some shotgun shells.

I'm with Dragonfly, something is wrong here.

I agree with bob and dragonfly. I've been suspicious for several months now, I never really bought into the 5.56/.223 brass destruction thing since everything I saw was from private companies instead of DLA- not to mention spent brass has been classified the same way for years, it must be destroyed if it is being shipped overseas.

On a brighter note, I've found one handgun caliber that I can acquire without problems. I'm not telling what it is though.

You do not sell it, I've looked. It is not .38 caliber. It's older than our, yours and mine, ages combined. I ordered 100 rounds earlier this week and got them today.

Let me guess 44 magnum. Walmart in Farmville had three boxes. The associate told me that they do get shipments of 3 or so boxes that used to be in cases but it is gone before the box gets cold on the shelf and the current price for 9 mm at wallyworld was $18.95 a box of 50

Not 44 magnum. It is a .30 caliber, more appropriately 7.62, that was designed by a Belgian for the Russians.

I agree this looks like the gas "shortage" of long ago.. If I want it around here I can get it,,,But the price has shot thru the roof in the last month... 9mm sells for what 40 was selling for but the supply is here,,,Most places will only sell individual boxes ,,and if you can get a 1000 there is no bulk discount ,,,,,,,I just picked up 9mm Winchester for 19$ a box "OUCH " at least kiss me first!!!

That's it, Nagant M1895. There doesn't seem to be much call for that ammo, at least not right now. A couple of other handgun rounds that really shouldn't be a problem to get are the 7.62 Tokarev and the 9mm Makarov. Again, doesn't seem to be much demand for those calibers and surplus ammo is available.

Well my wally world got a TON of ammo today, 9mm, .40 and .45 I saw boxes and boxes and boxes....

They let me buy 1000 rounds of WWB 100 round value packs at 19.95 a box.... I didn't have any problem buying 1K rounds because they told me they got 100 boxes of each caliber in...

I know one place it was not; Farmville. They had three boxes of 44 magnum and several boxes of 223 and some other caliber but no 40 or 9 mm and the sales associate said he has not seen any. Tried to sell me a crossbow though said he had plenty of arrows

Like I have said before, there are warehouses full of primers because they cannot be shipped to retail stores since their manufactuers have federal contracts to supply them. If you have a FEDERAL contract and ship them, you will lose your contract.
Spend brass from federal guns is being destroyed and released to the reloaders for usage. Someone needs to do some investigating at a high level, that is for sure.
