Magpul Angled Fore Grip (AFG-1)

Post by gunderwood »

I'm not a big fan of vertical grips. If an AR has them I use them as a hand stop and grab in front of it. Vertical grips pull the rifle down faster in recoil, but accuracy suffers IMHO. A traditional rifle hold (on regular AR handguards) allows for more accuracy, but less control and speed during tactical situations. The AFG is the best of both worlds IMHO.

Installation is simple if you have a rail. A single cross bolt holds it on, but it is solid. The crossbolt has a semi-captured nut on the other side. The nut shape is molded into the handguards, but if you take the crossbolt out completely the nut comes out (isn't molded in). That grip is going nowhere...unlike some of the vertical grips I've seen. It is made out of the high impact polymer like their mags, so good luck breaking it. The design is actually two molded halves which allows you to modify the grip slightly. There are two cap head screws that hold the halves together and do nothing to hold the grip on the rail. Thus, under the one cross bolt and the grip comes off, but stays in one piece. Good design.

By taking the halves apart you can swap a small grip; either small ridges or a large finger separating ridge.

My image showing the small ridge piece installs (smooth, but with grip essentially). I prefer this insert.

Additionally, the AFG has a hand stop. This is to keep your hand from sliding forward and touching the hot gas tube. I like it, but sort of like the feel of wrapping my pointer finger around it. Really pulls the rifle into the shoulder with no effort.

Here is a picture showing how to use it. It is very natural.

You're way more tactical than I am. I guess my beloved KAC VFG is the old school now.

I am also not a fan of the vertical grip on the forearm..not at all, but that one looks like a winner in my book...my AR is plain jane but I might do some mods one of these days...
No more catchy slogans for me...I am simply fed up...4...four...4...2+2...
