Hello.
Gee, why am I just now thinking that I should have read a few of the other Introduction posts before writing this?
Oh well, I'm just going to push ahead at this point.
I am new to the sport and the idea of CC. When young (Junior High School, which I suppose they call Middle School in most VA school districts) we had a rifle range in the basement. It was great to get out of class at the end of the day and go downstairs to hone our skills. I received lots of patches and certificates in that small room. I sometimes wonder if that range would have remained open if it's location was better known.
Well, a few (OK, lots of) years later I got the bug again to get out and do some shooting. Now, I'm hooked but still feeling like a newby. Please be patient with me and any stupid questions or comments, I'm trying.
My greatest challenge is: where in the world can you go to shoot around here? Our neighborhood has large lots (10+ acres), but you can't shoot. I've scanned the Internet for places and asked others from my church who have CHP and get out. They can name only one place to go in the Loudoun County area: Izaak Walton. They also know of one place in Ashburn, one in Chantilly, and the NRA range in Fairfax (about a 70 minute drive).
I'm glad I stumbled across VGOF.
Later,
Kotar
P.S. Kotar is a name I used in college for computer logins and such.

I am in Loudoun County, near Leesburg. I'll check the range reviews to scout for locations.graybeard321 wrote:where in NOVA are you in fairfax there is a range between lorton and springfield. I think that is the Ashburn place he referenced.Mindflayer wrote:Kotar - Silver Eagle Group has a 50 yard indoor range.
Two words: private land. You need to own or have family who have lots of land. Farms are great. If you can't work that out, buy lots of cool toys so that people with land want to be your friend. You let them shoot cool toys they can't afford, they let you shoot on land you can't afford. Win-win.

The next time we move (it's inevitable) I will either buy on property without firearms restrictions (I'm currently on 15 acres with an additional 33 across the street that I also own, and firearms are prohibited in this 'neighborhood') or make certain there is a nearby lot I can purchase where firearms are allowed.
All: Thanks for all the welcome messages!

At this stage... everything's cool to me. To most experienced shooters, no, not yet.

Yes, I have been exceedingly blessed by the Lord. Both in cool toys and in access to private land. In 45mins I can have my own 300 yard range or 60+ acres of wooded land to set up any thing I want. If only I didn't have to drive nearly 4 hours to get 1k yards.allingeneral wrote:I like thatgunderwood wrote:Two words: private land. You need to own or have family who have lots of land.
