Ok, had a little free time today and went to the range today. (yes, I just couldn't wait to shoot the new M1A, lol)
Was shooting my AR and the scope was all off! And when I say off, I mean it wasn't even on paper at 100 yrds. When I went home back at the beginning of April, me and my step-dad got it sighted in and everything was peachy.
Then when I went farther up north to my Dad's place, I let my brother take my gun outside to shoot it. The only thing I can think of is that he wasn't hitting anything, and probably started messing with it.
NOW, I go to put my bore sighter in my bag for tomorrow and I can't find it. It's probably sitting in my Mom's garage back in Michigan. I will call tonight when they get home from work so they can check. But that won't help me with it now.
Does anyone have something they can bring, so I can sight it back in? I would really appreciate it. Mine is a cheapy laser version, but it works good enough to get it on paper.
Can someone help me tomorrow at Bill's?

I plan on bringing mine as I need to sight in the 50BMG again. I messed with the scope and changed the muzzle break.

You can save yourself range time by bore sighting it tonight. AR's are a piece of cake to bore sight in.
Drop your lower off, pull your bolt out, fix the upper in a vice and aim it across the street something, then dial your scope in to match your bore picture. You can get within 12" @ 100yds if you take your time. I do a lot of scopes for myself and others

Another way to get close is:
1. Find the mechanical center of the adjustment. Spin it all the ways up or down and come back halfway. The reticle is now in the center of the scope.
2. The bullet will drop 2-3" over 100 yards for a round travelling at 2500-3000fps, which is approx. 2-3MOA. Come down 3MOA to compensate. (You move the reticle down so you aim the gun higher)
3. Find out how high the center of your scope is over the center of your bore in inches. Let's say it is 1.5", than come down 1.5MOA.
4. If you have canted scope rings or base, come down that many MOA. E.g. if you have a 20MOA base, come down 20MOA. If you have 0MOA base, come down zero.
5. You should hit paper.
The reason this often works is that the mechanical center of the scope is approx. the optical center too. Thus, when you do step 1 the scope/reticle and the bore are parallel. Step 2 compensates for the actual bullet drop out of the barrel. Do a little less for bullets over 3000fps and a little more for those under 2500fps. Step 3 corrects for the fact that while the scope and bore were parallel in step 1, they have a vertical offset. Since you are shooting at 100 yards, you can approx. the correction be going from inches to MOA directly. Step 4 corrects for any forward cant you have in your base. I.e. if you have a 40MOA base, in step 1, the bore and the scope are not parallel, but rather are offset by 40MOA.
A side note is that to get the maximum elevation out of your scope you should have a base just under 1/2 of your max elevation adjustment. I.e. long range scopes for shooting 1000+ yards usually have 40MOA bases (30 and 35 are also common for 1000-1500 as 100MOA of adjustment usually isn't needed until you exceed approx. 1500 yards). 1/2 of 100 is 50MOA, but you need some play as there are other corrections that need to be made to zero a rifle. Thus, a 100 yard zero puts the reticle nearly at the bottom of the scope tube and you have nearly the full 100MOA of adjustment to correct for elevation.
Edit: On cheap scopes this may not work at all as the "adjustments" are not really precise. Or you may have to bang the rifle on the ground to "seat" the reticle.

Thanks all... I just read this and it is getting late. Anyways, I wouldn't want to really point at anything in my neighborhood... I live in a cul de sac at the center of the circle. And the elementary school is on the corner, maybe 60 yards at the most. My neighbor is a very nosy british lady and is the captain of the neighborhood watch. I could see it now if I pointed a gun at ANYTHING! Oh lord. Because when I open my garage door, everyone on the street can see in.
