Received Temporary instead of CHP

Post by ShootinCpl »

Hello all,
Went down to the Roanoke County courthouse on March 26th and submitted my application for my CHP. I brought my application, chp class certificate as well as a copy of the certificate for their records. Then the waiting began! My postal carrier must have thought we were waiting for a large tax refund or something as we normally go two or three days between checking mail but we were checking mail daily.

On April 30th (day 35) I went to the courthouse and was told it was only day 35 and the processing can take 45 days. With the thought they might have sent it out on day 45 and it would arrive day 46 I waited till day 47 to call them. I found out over the phone that I was receiving a temporary permit that was sent that day (I did receive it the following day) and she wasn't sure why I was only getting the temporary permit.

Are there any suggestions of something I should do? I have only had one ticket and that was before 18, since submitting the application I have passed the background check to buy a firearm, I have no idea what is going on.

Thanks for letting me rant. :-)

I don't know how they do things in Roanoke, but at least they're following the law by providing you with a temporary permit after 45 days. Maybe just hold onto the the temp for a week or two and see if someone contacts you about it. The temporary permit is good for 90 days from the date of issuance. If you haven't heard anything within a couple of weeks, I'd say it's time to take a little more aggressive action.

Or, if you don't feel like waiting and want to hear from the horse's mouth, you could call the Roanoke County Clerk or send him an email:

Wooooohooooo! My CHP came in Friday! My Husband got home before I did and he called me telling me he had something from the county in his hands. Once I got home I signed it and we promptly went out to Staples and got it laminated. Didn't need to call the county, they took care of all of it themselves.

Congrats on the CHP!. Thanks to the new law going into effect July 1, you'll be able to renew by mail.

I'll be submitting my paperwork tomorrow. It's tough to OC when you live 20 yards from school property.

Waiting for my Utah permit since mid-May.
Will be happy when it arrives (if the prints were OK).
