Hi from VA

Post by Insane »

Well I'm new to the idea of OC. I would like to do this for my job as a census taker. Where I live "the moonshine capital of the world" isn't the best place to just be walking up on some unknown man, in the middle of hick country. I know for a fact that there are people in the county that are a bit crazy to say the least. Honestly, I'm a bit afraid to do this. I'm also afraid that if i do OC that it will cause more harm than good.. But in any since i would like to start OC. I did a quick search and couldn't find my answer. Where is it illegal to OC?

Well it's funny you should post this because just today I had a census man knock on my door to take some info from me. I live in what you called "hick county"(sounds kinda prejudiced don't ya think) I answered the door with a .45 caliber Glock in my holster under a t shirt. I have a permit for concealed carry. I guess I am one of those crazy men you talked about, but this was a strange man on my property and I am always carrying my pistol if I am awake. I asked for his credentials which he supplied and we had a 5 minute interview about the census info and then we talked about fishing since he had a bass hat on. He had seen the VGOF sticker on my truck and asked about it and we talked 15 minutes about shooting, carrying a handgun for personal protection and the second amendment. He was a great guy. It sounds like based on your choice of words that you are scared of people in the country. You probably should ask for an assignment in the suburbs or the city. If you are afraid, people are going to read that and think that something is wrong. If someone knocked on my door and I looked out and saw someone looking nervous and scared I would be on alert. If I saw you looked nervous or scared and were carrying a gun then that is a big red flag to me. This is just my two cents worth and after all I am one of those people that live in hick county with kids that go to hick schools, and I drive a hick truck.

Hey - I drive a hick truck with **TWO** VGOF stickers on the back glass and VGOF on the license plate! I have a couple of hick neighbors - one of them has a car on blocks in his back yard.

It's illegal to OC (or carry at all) on federal property, in a court house, on K-12 school property (with a couple of caveats), private property where posted as such, etc.

Also, you might want to check with your "Census Supervisor" or whatever to see if it's ok for you to OC. My guess is that you will be told not to carry while in performance of your duties.

Welcome to VGOF :welcome:

I second the opinion that you should discuss this with your supervisor. My guess is that the answer will be 'no'.

It would seem that the census enumerator job is a bit dangerous though, especially if you're driving.

No,I can't blame you for that. These people have moonshine and weed, and they're willing to kill to protect it. That's my only worry. I'm a hick by the way, so I don't mean it in any prejudice kind of fashion. Just a way of explaining things. Sorry if i offended you. I can keep my stature in almost any situation, I just do not want to have to be watching my back every place I go to, is all.

Yes, I am driving and going door to door. My guess would probably be that they would say no as well. However, I read of plenty of people who did it and had no problems. No where in the rules manual did it say it's prohibited, except for carrying it on government land. I'm thinking of no carrying it on my person, but to keep it in my car. If I make it to the door I'll be ok the rest of the way. Most here that have something to protect they will shoot as soon as you step out.. I'm sure this sounds a bit unbelievable but trust me, I married into a family like this.. Daughter, brothers mom, and dad are nice, but her dads brothers and uncles, eh, I hope i don't have to walk up to their doorstep..

Thank you for your reply. So carrying into a Wal-Mart, Kroger etc is ok then? As well as fast food places?
Oh, heres a good one, What about a Mall that has a applebees or another alcoholic selling restaurant that also allows drinking it on the spot? I ask because it's connected to the Mall, so i'm confused if the rules apply to that as well. Thanks.

OC is the only legal method of carry in a restaurant that serves alcohol until the new law takes effect on July 1. As far as carrying on private property such as a mall, grocery store or Wal-Mart, it's legal unless there are signs posted to the contrary.

That doesn't mean that you won't be asked to leave. Some businesses have a policy against firearms but will not post signs.

Also, never tell a business owner that they should post a "No Guns" sign if they have asked you to leave.

Before going out to eat or shop, stop by the VCDL.org website and browse the "Gun Owner Unfriendly" list.

INSANE -
Welcome to the VGOF!
:welcome:

top left hand side of the pages under "site navigation"...start with the first link, and dont stop until you have read them all...with special attention to the "Code of Va"...and then come back and ask questions adn you will find a large group of folks that will do some figurein', dickerin', point counter pointin', and raise a few angles that you may not have considered...

I came looking for some of the same info a while ago and never left... :coffee: :enlighten:
Be particular, and be vigilant, as the enemy will only attack on two occasions:
When you're ready or when you're not ready.

Also never forget, that everyone who shows up, is not necessarily there to help.

VA Code says CC is illegal in establishments that sell alcohol for consumption on the premises...so if the mall itself has the license then that applies, but thats probably not the case...places like Wally world sell alcohol though not for consumption on the premises so you're ok there...some of the non-chain fast food places might sell beer...you can check on-line at the ABC site...here's a link...
