My Morning
My Morning
I didn't get to blow the cobwebs out of the barrel on my 12Ga. today. The day started out beautiful, sunup was clear and still you couldn't ask for a better morning. At around 6:45 I called in a hen, that hen hung around me for almost 15 minutes and she was talking all the while, I was sure she would call in a gobbler, no such luck.
The day went down hill from that point, around 7:30 a front started moving in, cloudy, windy, and a slight drizzle. I stuck it out for another hour, then walked home had a cup of coffee and dried off.
I went over to my friends property and called a few times and sure enough I got a gobble, I set up under a big oak and called again, I got another gobble, well this went on for about an hour, I could tell by the sound that this gobbler was walking back and fourth but would not come in. I moved in a little closer as close as I dared, same thing, he would not come in range.
It was close to quitting time so I went over to my friends house and he told me he was looking out his window around 9:00 and saw that gobbler and a bunch of hens walk across his field, that explains it. He would not leave those ladies for me, so no bird for me today, I'll be out again monday, hope I get one.

Re: My Morning
Sounds like a tough day. After you dried off, I hope the rest of the day was good weather for you. Hopefully you'll have pictures of a gobbler for us on monday!

Re: My Morning
I hope I didn't sound negative Rick, any day I'm out in the field with a shotgun in my hands is a good day. I was just stating the facts thats what happened. It is always interesting out there.
Now my friend he was having a bad day, he is 9 years older than me he's 76 and friday he had four teeth pulled, so he was hurting. He couldn't go hunting so all he was doing was sitting there looking out the window. I had to stop in to see how he was doing, he has no family left and I knew his girlfriend was busy. he is a tough old coot.

My morning wasn't any better than your's Bob. After calling since day break I finally had 2 twenty plus pound birds come in at 85 yards. They wouldn't come any closer and didn't have not one hen with them, and I worked them from 9:05 'till 10:30 then realized they must be gay.
I'll try them again Friday.

Re: My Morning
I've had them hang up like that Vahunter, sometimes just out of shotgun range, for no apparent reason. Then sometimes you call once or twice and they come running right to you. These birds are hard to figure out and I've been hunting them for a long time.
I'll be out first thing monday morning. I put up a second doghouse in the woods, I have one on the edge of a field that didn't workout too good but I left it there. The one I put up today is in an area that has a lot of scratching the area is all tore up, but it could be just hens.
If these turkey had as good a sense of smell as they have eyesight and hearing they would be impossible to hunt.
Right now I'm just sitting back having a beer and trying to decide what to do in the morning. Everything depends on the weather.

Re: My Morning
Dude - that junk is going around. This is a bit off topic, but it's now legal for gays to marry in Vermont. I can't seem to get away from gayness. It makes me sick. When I'm in town...it seems like everywhere I turn... *sigh* What's this world coming to? </rant>Vahunter wrote: then realized they must be gay.I'll try them again Friday.

I have nothing against same sex marriages as long as both chicks are smokin' hot.allingeneral wrote:Dude - that junk is going around. Seriously, I'm gonna give these birds a few more tries then I'm leaving the 12ga. 3 1/2" at home and taking my Savage .223.

Re: My Morning
Don't give up Vahunter there is plenty of season left, lots of time for that .223.
I hunted all morning and heard one lone gobble at day break, that was it for the day. I did not hear a shot fired today.
See what I added to my sig line, "them turkeys is wary" an old farmer I know told me that today. I got a good laugh out of that, this old guy has got to be pushing 90. I know he is a WW II vet, and a pretty nice old fella.
There is a lot of truth to that statement.

Re: My Morning
It's too early for me to give up. I got on a streak a few years ago killing a bird on opening morning 4 years in a row. The past couple of years Iv'e had to work hard for them. Of the last 5 turkeys Iv'e killed only 1 came in gobbling, the rest just snuck in. Maybe I can ruin ones day this Friday. I'll save the .223 for the last 2 days of the season if I need it.
Re: My Morning
Hey Vahunter, people that aren't turkey hunters can't understand, they don't know how tough it is to call in a bird, it works against nature, the hen is supposed to go to the gobbler.
You don't live that far from me, you have to be getting the same weather, today it was bad, cold and wet. I did hear two shots today one at around 7:15 and another at 11:00, neather was close to my land. I don't actually live in Brookneal, I live about 4 miles outside of town. It's the closest place to me that anyone would know. I'm sure you are out in the boonies too.
I hate those birds that come in silent, they are the tough ones, I like to see them in Full Strut, thats what it's all about.
I have a friend from up north that will be visiting, he will get here tomorrow afternoon, so I most likely won't be on line for the next four or five days. He is a hunter so we will be hunting heavy until saturday. He comes down south to hunt with me every year, lucky his wife and mine get along real good, my wife is a hunter but his isn't.
I'm having a cocktail or three tonight so I'm rambling so you have to excuse me, I hope you get one and if you do post a picture, my buddy is leaving sunday, so I'll probally be back on line then. If we get lucky and kill one or two I will post some pictures.
It's not good to be drinking Dr. Jack and posting on the internet, love that sour mash, it's only corn.
