Question on CHP form

Post by FrankG0 »

OK, here's a question: What do I put for race?
I bought a 2nd gun (for the wife) in December 2008 and I put H for Hispanic on the form.
The "instant" check took a few hours. I was told it took long because the salesman put in W for white and it caused a delay. But they were very busy and I may have misunderstood it backwards. That maybe he put H and they had W but I am pretty sure it was the first way.
So any ideas? Should I put H for hispanic or W for white? Arggggg!
(Right now I have W because on the Census I had to put both Hispanic and White.)
See why I'm confused. Damn, it didn't use to be this hard back in my early days!

Wait is your problem that you're Hispanic but you look white? (I have the same problem.) I tend to just put "white" on my forms, since that describes my appearance and I'm sure that's what they care about more. That's what came pre-marked on my school standardized tests (and we know those government schools never get anything wrong! ) so... it's what I go with. YMMV

I put W and got the form notarized today. Will be taking it to the Sheriff's office on Monday I hope and then off to the Circuit Court to drop it off...

They shouldn't even be asking that.

I often think about when my kids get older and have to fill things like that out, I'm Italian and English and my wife is black and puerto rican so they have to mark almost everything, lol

Good luck FrankG0! Honestly I think they care of it as more of a descriptive characteristic (like your height and weight) as opposed to your family history. But you know how the government is. :tinfoil:

The "government" in general is fixated on the Hispanic population. Every other word on the census form is "Hispanic." They are looking to see how they might redistrict and garner votes. Could be a similar thing on the CHP form. IMO the only thing like that they need is to help identify you. That could be easily rectified if they would put a neat little gun symbol on our DL which has a color picture...

OK. Monday was a bust since I had a family sickness to deal with. So I was able to visit the Sheriffs Office today and then dropped off my application at the Courthouse. Now to wait 45 days or less...

For background check for the gun purchase, I don't think it really matters. That question is most likely there to help differentiate you from somebody else with the same name should the other identifying characteristics be of no use.

For your CHP, I think they have some notion of putting out a bulletin with your physical characteristics. At least that's the only reason I can figure they also want identifiable scars, tattoos, and fingerprints. I'd bet that information has never been used.

In your case, if they ever denied you for saying you were white instead of hispanic or vice versa, that would sure be interesting to see them explain. Imagine how much they would trip over themselves trying to be politically correct with that sort of thing. It could be pretty hilarious.

How about - IRDCWYTAMR?

I really dont care what you thing about my race...once upon a time it was illegal to ask that. Now for some reason on the census form every other word seems to be "hispanic."

Greetings Fellow Patriots and Gun Owners of the Commonwealth!

The issue of "race" should never be identifiable on ANY government form. What the hell makes the difference what "race" you are anyway? Aren't we all "Americans" in this great land? I can guarantee you one thing for certain: there are no racists in foxholes! The same as there are no atheists.

Respectfully,

Albert

Albert, You have that nailed as to the illegality--the blatant unconstitutionality--of requiring individual citizens to classify themselves by race or ethnicity.

Think about this: I'm a descendant (second-generation to be born in the U.S.) of a very small scrap of a Jewish family that succeeded in escaping the Pale of Jewish Settlement in Polish Russia in 1890. Those who did not didn't live through the tribulations inflicted by the Nazi horrors of the 1930s and 1940s. Dead--all of them.

The ONLY way the Hitler mob could carry out such a thorough program of extermination was by establishing a system of records identifying persons by race or other "forbidden" characteristic. Lacking that they'd simply be be picking up individuals and families randomly. There was no other purpose.

Given the nature and ethic of the United States, there is no reason whatsoever to maintain such a system.
