I NEED SOME LEAD WHEEL WEIGHTS

Post by gunsliner1985 »

i am looking for a regular source for scrap wheel weights, i would like to get a pretty big pile and make some ingots, so that i can cast a little stash of bullets, if someone has a source PM me, i would be willing to give up a few bucks, or trade some ammo or something for them!

thanks as always!

Check the Yellow pages for your local Pick-N-Pull salvage yard. They probably pull hundreds of them off the wheels of cars about to be scrapped.

My father used to have buckets of old lead weights sitting around his shop. We used to melt them down and make small boat anchors.

I would hit up local tire stores and ask if they have any you could have or buy. I did once - been a long time ago - and ended up with 2 or 3 5 gallon bucket fulls.

If you are using them in a confined space be careful. If I'm not mistaken they contain anitmony and it can be harmful if you inhale too much of the vapors from it.

Not sure what they contain other than lead but a little antimony will help harden up the bullets a little. A word of caution though is that some manufacturers might be using a different metal than lead because of environmental concerns. Not sure what that would do to your bullets but casting might be dicey due to melting points and getting a nice filled bullet mold.

See the nice print in red.

i read a few articles on these new lead free wheel weights, seems like they are pretty new, and going to be used in cali mostly, i figure older cars are the ones being junked, and getting new tires, i doubt we will see these lead free weights in VA for a few years. anyhow i think i will be able to see the difference, and i doubt a wheel weight made of other metals will melt at lead melting temps, i do appreciate the info though, as you can never take to much advice!

Talk about 6 hours to late. I just got home from buying my melting pot and was going to post the exact same thing asking for lead wheel weights. I found a guy locally that gave me half a bucket, but I need more than that. I fixed his mkII for him and got them for free, go figure. Well, I'm in the Shenandoah Valley (Luray) and will drive to anyone who has wheel weights available, that is if Gunsliner doesn't want them or they aren't local to him, I'll obviously give him first dibs since he posted it. I don't want to steal anyones Pb now.

If you got 1/2 a 5 gallon bucket full thats a lot of bullets. You aint gonna shoot that many any time soon...you gonna sell em or hoard em... :hysterical:

Even half a pail is alot. Seriously, in Luray you can probably find a garage or two that has tons just laying around...those guys probably have to pay some sort of fee if they take them to the dump. If I were you I'd make some phone calls. You might be surprised at what you find...

Its definately a start. I have already fished out quite a bit of zinc/steel and quite a bit of valvestems and other junk.. so after I smelt and pull the clips out its maybe 40ish lbs. Definately nothing to complain about, thats over 1000 230gr RN's, but really, is 1000 really enough :tinfoil:

Have you considered going to some of the local junkyards. There are literally hundreds of junk cars sitting in these places waiting to be used for parts or compacted for scrap metal. LOTS of them have rims, and a lot of those rims have wheel weights on them. More than likely you could have all you want if you are willing to use a pair of pliers and remove them yourself. My son collects license plates and he has gotten acquainted with the proprietor of one here and he lets him roam throughout his junkyard and remove any he wants and doesn't charge him. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Kevin,

There is decent scrap yard right outside one of the gates at Langley. I will stop by there on my lunch break today or tomorrow and ask for ya. The guy sits out at the end of his drive watching the F-22's a lot. If I don't see him out, I will drive up in there for ya. To be continued....
