New Years gun rights resolution: last installment

With today being New Year's Day, it will be the last installment in the Examiner Special Project regarding New Years resolutions pertaining to gun rights. As a result, I could not resist suggesting more than one! First, try out a rifle at long range! Most people never stretch their rifle's legs beyond 100 or 200 yards. If you have never tried it, you will soon discover that 300 to 500 yards is a lot farther in real life than it is on the internet. The original idea behind the NRA was to develop a nation of marksmen, but today the art of long range marksmanship is sadly neglected. Resolve for 2010 to find a shooting range with several hundred yards available within a driving distance from your home, pack up the rifle and ammunition, and go shoot! If you have not tried it before, it is a lot of fun. If you have, then resolve to develop this needed skill. If the people are the militia, then they need to become riflemen. Do your part to make that happen. I resolve to shoot at long range in 2010.


Oleg Volk, A Human RightTeach your children about firearms! Primarily, teach them about safety. What do they do if they find a firearm when you are not present? Teach them the rules about firearm safety for when you are present. Teach them about marksmanship. Teach them about history. Rest assured that their public school is not teaching them that the colonist's rebellious stand at Concord and Lexington, Massachussetts, was about the lobsterbacks coming to seize their weapons and ammunition. Are you fulfilling your responsibility to teach them why firearms are important for a free people? I resolve to teach my children about firearms in 2010.


Oleg Volk, A Human Right, "Acceptable Losses"Arm and train your loved ones. It may be the difference between life and death when you are not at home. Make sure that your family knows where the firearms are, they know how to safely and effectively use them, and they are mentally prepared to do so if necessary. Your family's safety is nobody else's responsibility, and court cases have held time and again that the police have no obligation to protect any person from harm at the hands of a violent criminal, even after somebody calls 911 asking for their help. Begging, pleading, and crying is not an effective home defense plan. Prepare for the worst, just as you carry health and fire insurance and have your family wear their seatbelts. I resolve to arm and train my loved ones in 2010.

Attend bill hearings at the General Assembly. There are numerous bills pending in 2010 that affect your right to bear arms. Show up. Talk about them with your legislators. Write. Call. Make sure they know that your civil rights are important to you. The first such hearing is on January 7, 2009, at 9:30 a.m., as I wrote on Wednesday. Remember, they do not hold such hearings at night or on weekends, so is it important to you or not? Your actions will tell them all they need to know. I resolve to attend bill hearings at the General Assembly in 2010.

Join an activist group fighting for the right to bear arms. My first recommendation is http://www.GeorgiaCarry.Org, but consider others as well. The NRA, Gun Owners of America, Virginia Citizens Defense League, Georgia Sport Shooting Association, and others. They need your time, efforts, and money if you expect them to be effective. If you do not like something they are doing, provide your input to the leadership. Get active! I resolve to join an activist group fighting for the right to bear arms in 2010.
