Virginia Assault Weapons Ban (HB961) failed in Committee

Post by allingeneral »

HB961 was referred to the Crime Commission and will not become law this year.

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Senate Judiciary Committee continued HB961, also known as the assault weapons ban, to the 2021 session.

Along with the motion to push the bill to next year, senators voted to send a letter to the crime commission to study it.

Advocates pushed for the bill saying it would save lives, but Republicans joined with some moderate Democrats saying they needed longer to look at it.

The bill had passed the House of Delegates 51-48.

Virginia lawmakers reject assault weapon ban
Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam's push to ban the sale of assault weapons has failed after members of his own party balked at the proposal
RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam's push to ban the sale of assault weapons failed on Monday after some of his fellow Democrats balked at the proposal.

Senators voted to shelve the bill for the year and ask the state crime commission to study the issue, an outcome that drew cheers from a committee room packed with gun advocates.

Four moderate Democrats joined Republicans in Monday's committee vote, rejecting legislation that would have prohibited the sale of certain semiautomatic firearms, including popular AR-15 style rifles, and banned the possession of magazines that hold more than 12 rounds.

I love that this died in Senate committee, but I feel like its a bad thing. This whole threat of an AWB lit a wicked fire, motivating a lot of pro-2a people that normally sit on their butt. I fear that without a major threat to our Rights, people are going to instantly fall back to doing nothing, assuming someone else will deal with it.

There's ALWAYS a major threat to our rights; has been since day one.

Having Hillary's Gimp in the mansion should have been a wakeup call; instead we ended up with the current treasonous tyrant, followed by more traitors in the legislative branch.

The assault weapons ban may have failed, for the moment... but don't forget that this was only a fraction of the agenda.

Agreed. Some very bad bills are being passed. Not just in the 2A world... all aspects of life are being wrecked by the current agenda.

Marc, I was completely unaware that your wife is ill! Either this is the first you've mentioned it here, or I just completely missed it.

Regardless, I'm sorry to hear that, and I do hope that it's not serious.

Thank you H. Much appreciated.

I don't talk about it much. I probably haven't mentioned it here. I try not to sound like I'm whining. She is in pretty tough shape, though.

Although I'm not a Virginia resident (I am living in Virginia though), I did write an email opposing the AWB. I've lived all over and seen the affects firsthand of gun control laws. The reality is, you need to take the topic of guns off the table and run a parallel argument that you can tie back into guns for politicians to understand. What I did was compare a Honda Accord to a Lamborghini. Both cars are recognizably different to the uneducated. I pointed out there are kits available to make the Honda Accord look like a Lamborghini, but that doesn't mean the car is an actual Lamborghini. I then tied this into an AR-15 vs M-16 comparison. After all, the mad mommies are obsessed with "military-style" looks, but ignore the differences in function. I don't know if this had any affect on what happened in Richmond, but hope it did. Remember, what's happening in Virginia affects a whole lot more than just Virginians.

There are some very wicked people trying to run our lives with some very wicked ideas. There isn't anything in the democrat minds I agree with. I don't know what I would do if a dem was elected. I just think the caucus will determine who the DNC nominee will be -- we have a much different opinion of the next president.
