New to Guns

Post by bzybee08 »

Hi all from central VA. Born and raised in England, never owned a gun, never fired anything but an air rifle. Lived in the boonies for 8 years but never brought a gun. I had great neighbors who would investigate any problems and shoot anyone out of place.

However, I recently moved and am in a new sub-division. I did not think about it at the time, but the houses scream 'rob me'. My neighbors probably would not stir even if they heard breaking glass. On Monday someone did break in when I was at work. Been a little unsteady coming home since.

So, I want a gun. Defense is my main purpose. If something happens when I am home, I don't expect the police within 15 minutes. Looking for a revolver, something simple and light.. but something that will require redecorating a room after I have used it at someone..

So, hi all :)

First off Welcome! Since you say you have no experience with handguns, I would recomend finding a class or range to try some guns out and learn safe handling and use. Also make sure you know the laws on self defense.

Again :welcome:

Welcome

For home defense I'd recommend a shotgun. Load it with buckshot and point in direction of bad guy.

:welcome: From Louisa! (which I might add is also in central VA - so take that NOVA :clapping: ) Just getting into the handgun world myself - lots of options - so +1 for the fireman, with your selection being one you are comfortable, confident and competent with.

Welcome to VGOF! :welcome:

I'm sure ProShooter will chime in shortly with information on one of his training classes. Until then, you can look here:

And I second the motion for training. As Jay said, ProShooter can set you up.

I have a 12 ga shotgun for home defense. It is a fight stopper.

If you want to go down the revolver route, consider a Taurus Judge. It is a revolver that can shoot 45 Colt or 410 shotgun shells. And if you do get one, be sure to invite us all out to the range to help you break it in.

"And if you do get one, be sure to invite us all out to the range to help you break it in."

Do you seriously want to be within range when I break in a new gun for the first time ever? :)

Thanks all for the suggestions and welcome. Ashland is not to far so I like the idea of the training nearby.

 Hello and :welcome: to VGOF!
Keep in mind that everyone has their own opinion about "the best" gun for self defence....but one peice if advice thats always accurate and sure (and of course, already given :) ) get at least some basic training and then choose the tool that best suits you and your situation and you feel the most comfortable with.

If you pass ProShooter's class, there will be nothing to worry about. :pistol:

Anyway, welcome aboard and let us know how everything turns out.

:welcome: to VGOF. Yes, watch for shoot and greet announcements. We are a friendly bunch and someone will no doubt let you try something out if you come to the range. Nothing like introducing someone to the wonderful world of guns whether it be for defense, hunting, or just plain old fun.

Hi bzybee and welcome aboard! :welcome:

Are you a man or a woman? That makes a bit of difference in firearm selection - for instance, someone mentioned the Taurus Judge. I probably wouldn't suggest that particular weapon as a first firearm for a woman - well, probably not for a man either for that matter.

I like my Taurus .38 Special UltraLite. And as also mentioned previously, a shotgun is a good one to keep around as well.

Get some training and maybe we'll see you out on the range! Don't hesitate to ask if you have any other questions regarding laws or anything else.
