Not Sure How It Happened...

Post by SHMIV »

I seem to have acquired a dog. All I wanted to do was pet a stray puppy. Now, TBH has named it, and it is sleeping soundly in my truck.

I suppose that it's my own fault, really. I did spend an hour and a half, just getting her to come to me. She had been wandering around, with her head down and tail tucked. Once I gained her trust though, she turned into a little love bug. Then TBH got out of the truck, and that little puppy took right to her. That did it. Should never have let my wife near that dog, lol. That dog was coming with us, regardless of my opinion, after that.

Fortunately, she's a young enough pup to adapt pretty quickly. And, I'm not seeing the red flags that one normally sees with strays; aggression, protective of food, etc.

When we first put her in the truck, she wagged her tail, did a quick sniff around, and promptly flopped down and went to sleep. From her actions and body language, she apparently feels totally safe.

The 1st couple of times I took her back out of the truck, she didn't much like it; it made her very nervous. She wouldn't come near the door. And, when it was time to come back in the truck, she appeared delighted and relieved to be back. My guess is, she once got out of a truck, and never saw it again.

She also appears to have a little separation anxiety. I left the truck, this morning, for all of 90 seconds. When I returned, her tail was wagging and she was trembling. It was if she thought I was gone for good. I note that she gets nervous when TBH leaves the truck, too.

Although, she seems to have gotten better, over the course of the day. Last night, it took some doing to get her to come to me; tonight, when we walked her, she wanted to talk to everyone. So that's good. Also, she seems to want to meet other dogs. This, too, is good.

When she's really happy, she does this little whine, then she throws her head back and does this short howl, all while wagging her body.

Tomorrow morning, she gets a bath. I hope that she likes it. In another day or two, it's off to the vet. She needs shots, and I want an idea of her age. Maybe, we can do a DNA test to find out what she is; I kinda want to know, so I can have an idea of potential health issues to watch for. Also, she has an odd kink in her tail, like it's been broken. It doesn't seem to bother her; I did poke at the kink, to see. Got no reaction, so that's good.

Overall, I suppose it was good to find her. Whatever she experienced prior to last night, she seems young enough to brush it off, for the most part. She went from shy and timid, to brimming with joy and confidence, over the course of 24 hours. I reckon that I'm glad to have gotten her, before she was ruined. I see a lot of strays, in my travels. It's quite sad to see what they've become. Even the ones that come close, keep the tail tucked, and seem almost to expect you to turn on them. And, they've been living like that for so long, it's unlikely that they would trust you enough to be totally trustworthy in a domestic situation.

I imagine that the separation anxiety with this one will wear off, before too long. At least, for the most part.

I think that she'll prove to be quite the good dog.

That's great. I've got my last two from the dog pound (dogs not fancy or pretty enough to go to the high dollar "animal shelters" that make so much money around here). The two before that were out from under a trailer in WV. The first one was a stray that wandered in to my in-laws house and adopted my youngest son.

Some dogs seem to get over what ever it was that happened to them before you get them. Some don't seem to ever be able to move completely past that. It haunts them and affects their behavior for the rest of their lives.

Good job, giving a good home to a poor/lonely dog that needed someone to love.

Oh, yeah. I prefer the not-so-fancy mutts.

The wife and had discussed the possibility of dog ownership, over the past couple of years, and had already decided that we would probably get a rescue dog of some sort. We just didn't realize, at the time, that we'd end up rescuing a stray.

I woke up TBH, this morning, by putting the dog in the bed with her. Oh, you should have seen how excited the dog was, lol. Her whole body was wagging. And, TBH woke up NOT grumpy. Bonus.

Sounds like your pup may have been somebody else's truck dog at one point, based on the happiness of getting into the cab and the loathe to come out of it.

Truly hope it works out.

You're a good man, Charlie Brown.

Dogs can be very different from each other, even when coming from the same litter. They are like people. Some are individuals and some like to be around other dogs, etc., etc.

One of the two I have right now will climb into any open car/truck door he sees. We have to be careful when putting things in the vehicles or taking things out. The newest one, not so much. You can do a combination of coaxing and picking him up in order to get him in the truck but he's not really interested in getting in with speed and desire like the older one.

The two puppies I got out from under the trailer 15 years ago had the same split. Two males from the same litter. One had to be put in the truck to go to the vet. and the other would climb in when the door opened up - even if you were still in it. Darn near wrecked me one afternoon. I knew he would jump up on the door once he saw me in it so I opened the door up to pat him on the head and he climbed in - under my feet/legs. I tried to keep the clutch pushed in but 60 lbs. of dog pushing/shoving his way under my legs got the truck bouncing/moving forward. All I could do was reach down and turn the key off before I ran into the carport/cars in the carport.

The fun parts will continue. As you and dog learn each other's habits. As you learn how smart and how well "balanced" a mutt can be (not all of them - one of the two we had from 15 years ago was a mess psychologically, compared to the other dogs we've had over the years.)

Good luck with it.

We rescued back in November. She was surrendered twice because she a very dominating and wild. She was also only about 52 poumds.

Through a tremendous amount of training and work she is a good dog. She also now about 75 pounds and happy.

I make deals with the dogs I get from the pound. Once we "talk" a bit, we're buddies for life and they will not go back to a small cage in a barking mad house to be held/ignored till they are put to sleep.

It's me and them. For as long as they "stay" here.

@ Randy; If I knew how to post pics from my phone (I assume that it's possible, lol), I would post pics of the pup. Maybe I can try to figure it out, later.

@Monkey; I believe that you are correct. It's impossible to tell if she jumped her last truck, or was dumped. But, she certainly feels comfortable in the truck.

Well, so far, outside of some separation anxiety, she appears to have shaken off the ill effects of her young but rough life.

We got her a bath, the other day. She didn't care for it, but she gave us no problems. She was very well behaved. Yesterday, we took her to the vet. She has the beginning of mange, but we are now treating it, so that problem will be gone, soon enough. Other than that, she's very healthy, thank God. She weighed in at about 33lbs, the vet declared her a pitbull, and estimated her age at approximately 6 months. Plus, her shots are up to date, now, and we got her dog license.

She's a good girl. No "accidents", yet. Takes care of business, outside, like she should. Like I said, she's very well behaved. We got lucky.

It sounds to me that whoever had her before was a man with a truck and he simply took her someplace and dropped her off. She was afraid you were going to do the same thing. Bless you for taking her in and showing her not everyone is heartless. My wife and I believe there is a special place in heaven reserved for people who take special care of these lost souls. There is a very special place waiting for you and your wife there. There is also a special place in the other direction waiting for the one who dropped her off. Again bless you.
