However, it's a political party, that has chosen an odd name for a group that wishes to be taken seriously. Of course, I do know folks that would vote for the because "pirates are cool!"

They lost me, here:
"The party's national platform calls for the abolition of patents - which it argues stifles innovation and prevents researchers from freely sharing ideas - and for limiting how long copyrights can stay in effect, saying there needs to be new models to compensate artists and others for their intellectual and creative work."
No. Sorry. If I create an object in my mind, and put forth the effort to engineer a functional prototype, I have the right to secure my rights to a profit from that effort. Perhaps the copyright laws could be improved upon, or not; either way, given their views on patents, I doubt I would care for whatever they'd put forth.
Then, there's this line:
" 'Everybody loves pirates so we don't see it as a problem,' he said."
The arrogant SOB is right, to a degree. As I said, I do know people dumb enough to take part, just so they can be "Pirates".
At least they are honestly named, I suppose. They want to plunder the intellectual intelligence of others. Sounds Piratey, to me.
Platform aside, the name IS kinda cool. It DOES sound fun, if most of what you know about pirates, you learned from Disney and Johnny Depp. Indeed, I have even found replica, sea worthy, pirate ships, and actively sought investors to possibly do pirate cruises. But, I would have kept the politics to a minimum, had that panned out.
