Family Shooting Activities

Post by pratt »

Hi, my 12-year-old son and I enjoy shooting together. He's a great shot and, for a guy his age, he can handle a 12 gauge, 9mm handgun, or .30 caliber rifle very well. We live in Loudoun County and go to Silver Eagle Group and Bull Run. What organized shooting leagues are available that we could do together? It doesn't matter much what kind it is--shotgun/rifle/handgun--action/target--the point is to enjoy the time together.

Comments and advice greatly appreciated!

There are several USPSA clubs, as well as 3-gun, IDPA, and Steel Challenge. The thing is that they travel from range to range. They don't normally shoot at any one specific range or club.

My advice would be to go out to the websites for the clubs in the NOVA area, look at what might catch your fancy, and look at their calendars to see what ranges they will be at and when. You may enjoy mixing it up a bit by participating in several types of club styles, but still keep it close to home.

There's a club in Hagerstown, MD (North American Rod and Gun) that has a trap and skeet league year round...do not need to be a member for either. To get into the skeet league is $20 then $5 per round (2 rounds per shoot)...so a normal day of shooting would be $20 for you and your son. At the end of the league you will get some money back, how much depends upon where you place on your team and where the team places. League runs 10 shoots every other Sunday from 0900-1200. I can get you information if you want...I'm in Winchester and drive up (approx. 1 hour).

Thank you for the replies. I'll continue my research about local clubs. I'll consider the Hagerstown idea, but favor options closer to home. The NRA's website provides contacts for people who can offer information about competitive shooting leagues.

If your son really likes to shoot, I'll recommend IWLA range in Centreville. It's $60 or $70 per year youth membership, and they have a beautiful indoor air rifle range with 25 lanes and soon with electronic targets. That place raised couple champions.

Thanks, Rev. An Appleseed weekend is a great family get-together. The calendar for this year is still being developed, with events in locations including Fairfax, Charlottesville, Montpelier, Mechanicsville, Amherst, and possibly the Tidewater area.
