Moving to VA within next 3 months
I'm Phil, a retired Navy Master Chief, retired accountant, and retired MSF RiderCoach, living in San Diego with my wife of 26+ years. She is not retired, and just got a promotion, which will require us to relocate to the Quantico / Stafford area.
I am a Range Officer at our local gun club, and also assist the instructors at our local community college basic firearms class. I shoot trap and conventional pistol. I also reload.
I know Virginia is a free state and am glad to be leaving the left coast.
I am hoping I can gain some information that will help us relocate to a nice area within the next 3 months.
After settling in, I want to continue my volunteering.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Phil aka motorcyclenut

Recommend buying north of Quantico if you are working on the base. That would put you in the free flowing lanes during rush hour.

Stafford is fairly close to Fredericksburg, which is fairly close to Culpeper.
If you could find something in between Culpeper and Fredericksburg, y'all may find that to be pleasant. Your wife may have a little bit of a commute, but if she learns the backroads, it shouldn't be too bad.

Got to tell us whether you want lattes, yoga, shopping and liberals... or land, space, limited shopping and restaurants, and winding country roads!
Basically are you black tie or back deck and beer?

She's at the point where she wants very little commute.

Back deck and beer type (although I can't drink due to medical reasons). I am THE designated driver for my wife and others.

If it were me, I would be looking at living on the South to Southwest side of Quantico. There is a Izaak Walton range down there. Also, as retired military you would be able to get in as a regular member at Quantico Shooting Club, and volunteer RSO's get benefits there. As far as commuting.... try to set yourself up to stay off of I-95. Can't speak for any other particular roads down there.
Oh, one comment on living near Quantico, you can often hear them shooting big guns and blowing stuff up... particularity on overcast days. I'm 10-15 miles, as the crow flies, and can hear them occasionally! Depends a lot on weather conditions.

Stafford is actually a fairly nice area... Especially on the water or far out west. Most of Fredericksburg is nice too.
I would not go north of Q town. Dumfries, Triangle and most of Woodbridge suck as far as crime and quality of homes. The places in Woodbridge that are nice, are expensive oasis'. Not much land an not for a reasonable price.
Honestly, the further south and/or east you go, the better it is, on average.
In any case, you already have a few friends near by. Just let us know when you make it.

Thanks for the info, what do you think about the Aquia area? We're looking to rent a 2 bedroom house and/or town home.

Welcome Aboard !!! I can't offer any info on Northern VA......I try not to go any further North than Ashland and only go there when necessary. Where ever you settle you will be welcome to come to the Southern part of VA to do a little shooting at my private range in Dinwiddie .

Aquia is small, rustic and litterally next to the highway. Overall it's not bad... I travel down that way for food a few times a month. If you are right on the water, it's a win. If you like rural, Aquia is not it... But it's scenic and would be a nice spot until you buy or rent the next, more "country" type home.motorcycelnut wrote:Thanks for the info, what do you think about the Aquia area?
