Fort Lee POW Range

Post by VACitizen »

Been there several times when the weather was nice. Nice range. Took my wife & daughter there 3 weeks ago and they had fun with their new S&W 38 spl. All of us have CC permits and I feel better now that they have had more range time.

Hours are Sunday 10-4. They add Wed evening when daylight allows.

Went to Ft. Lee this past Sunday. Very helpful staff, very willing to answer questions, very tolerant of newbies. Very safe range control. Provided target frames, staplers, gunrests, spikes and mallet for driving spikes into the ground. You bring your own eyes, ears, and ammo and bring or buy targets from them at reasonable prices. They didn't start my range time until I actually got to start shooting. Since my wife was also shooting but we only used one lane, they gave us a break on her shooting time. I was very pleased with this range and I'll definitely be going back! :first:

Many people have been asking about the Wed. hours, that was last year for the summer time only. We are unable to get the evening hours this year due to new military training in the area. Hopefully we will be able to get the 5-8pm hours back next year. The POW is only open from 10-4 pm with a registration cut off at 3pm (this is so everyone gets their full hour worth of shooting) The range fee is $5 per hour, per person, (even if you are sharing weapons and/or shooting stations)
Also we have now opened 5 shooting lanes for small-bore rifles, .17 centerfire upto .223 (5.56), anything higher will have to wait until the new rifle range is finished, when that will be.... dont know?!? If you have any other questions feel free to give us a call at the Fort Lee Outdoor Rec. office (804)765-2212

Went their a couple weeks ago. Brought some new M4's I built, dialed in some optics. Friends grandfather brought some of his old flintlocks which were a blast.

The Ft Lee range is a welcome break from the average public range. I have been discouraged from the past because of flagrant safety violations and ho hum attitude from other range personnel.

I assume that the range is on Ft Lee, is that correct? What are the rules for civilian use of the range?

I just learned that I'm going to be on site at Ft Lee several times over the next couple of years... if I can get some range time when I'm on travel, I'll be thrilled!

Actually it's not on Ft Lee, it's on River Road on the north side of Rt 36.

The rules for civilian use are simple - show up, pay money, sign some forms and go shooting. At least that's all I did when I went there.

Had a great day sighting in my new DDM4v3 today. It was my first time at this range and for the price it's a great deal. The range officers are welcoming as well as the other shooters. If you haven't been to this range yet, you're truly missing out. Open on Sundays only.

Let's give this a little update.
This is a nice outdoor range with limited capabilities. You can shoot hand guns up to 50 cal, black powder and shotguns out to 100 yards. For rifles, max caliber is 223/5.56 to a maximum of 50 yards due to the backstop.
Target stands are provided for paper targets, but you can bring your own. (Might be a good idea as I had to wait 20 minutes for one to become available.)
The range fees have changed. They are now $20 for all day.
The range is currently open the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month from 10 to 4.
Using the range is easy (got some false information from the soldier sitting the desk at the Range Operations Station just inside the gate). You don't need to stop there. Turn onto River Road from Temple Ave. Take the first right after crossing the railroad tracks. Pass through the gate, pass the Range Operations Station, continue straight down the road until it is blocked by traffic cones, the range is on your left. Small parking area, only about 15 to 20 cars can fit. Go to the tower at the far right of the range. For first timers, you will have to read a Range Safety Sheet and sign a waiver. They will then issue you a Safety card good for one year. Pay your $20 (cash only at this time) and go have a day of fun.
For more information, there is a recorded message at (804) 765-1631 or contact the Fort Lee Outdoor Recreation Center at (804) 765-2212.
Shoot straight and stay safe.
