Back story: I was reading some comments about buying gold and silver and an ad that was in the NRA magazines. One person bad mouthed the NRA and the precious metals dealer that placed the ad and another person stated that the NRA was helpful to Illinois gun owners.

Gold and Silver aren't the only metals that preserve wealth. I also have a large supply of Brass and Lead.
Upon reading that my eyebrows knit and I read and re-read it several times before I broke out laughing.
Then I thought, "Yep, so do I."

You know, I been thinking about how the Gold and Silver trade value will work when when the world goes to crap. Who is to say that this amount of gold is worth this amount of food or other things and not worth as much to the next person ? I mean there will be nobody out there that will regulate trade value across the board for Gold and Silver, I feel they will be worth just as much as the rocks laying on the ground.
I'm thinking that Rounds will be a more stable trading item than Gold or Silver.

Rounds will appreciate in value as their numbers decrease.
Whatever is used as money will be a facsimile of "livestock". If preppers weren't obsessed with metals, existing paper would do just fine.
My daughter's SO at the time, late 1999, was in a checkout line of a supermarket with a small basket of a few consumables behind a woman that had a large shopping cart full of several hundred dollars of fresh and frozen meat.
The woman turned and looked at his meager amount of purchases and asked, "Is that all you're going to buy? Aren't you afraid of what'll happen if Y2K really hits?"
He looked at her cart and asked, "If Y2K DOES cause a collapse and power goes out, how long is your freezer going to keep all that meat edible? The farmer that lives next to my land has plenty of beef on the hoof and I've got a rifle. I'll survive."
She just stood there with a "deer in the headlights" look on her face.

Silver at least has a medicinal effect, as if left in water in the sun will kill off microbes (Hence 49'rs, the miners, not football, would leave a silver dollar in a bucket of fresh water), you can make colloidal silver which can help, but forewarn, too much will turn your skin blue.
Gold CAN conduct electricity, so you could use that for something if the power is still going.
However, SKILLS top ALL. You cannot steal them, people are less likely to kill you if they know you possess them, they MIGHT feed you, and protect you.
If I find a jackass with a buncha gold, whose only talent is playing video games, and a 50 year old General Practitioner who specializes in natural, and low process medicines.
I think early in a SHTF situation, cash will still be handy. Even if the power is out and stores have been emptied/looted, there are going to be short term thinkers who will negotiate for cash. They won't have the foresight to understand cash is worthless in the long term. Having cash on hand, in the early days at least, might get you some gas, or even help you pay "tolls" to get across town or across the river. After that, brass and lead....

If the S keeps hitting the F long enough that paper money becomes worthless, then I doubt that there will be gas to buy or tolls to pay. Think Australian 'pocalypse films. Oxen to pull your vehicle and Bartertown runs on methane.
