Ruger American Stock Crack

Post by GregVa »

I took my Ruger American Rifle out to the range and then out for the youth day hunt a couple weeks ago. We didnt see any deer but had a great time.

When we got home and I went to clean my rifle I noticed my trigger guard was broken.

Its a brand new gun, so I know it happened at the range or in the field. In either case I called Ruger and they looked up the serial number, I guess to see it was new, and sent me a new stock in less than a week. They dont even want the old one back. So they had great customer service!

The trigger guard is still functional, its cracked behind the trigger and you can not get your finger through, so do I try to salvage it and make it a cammo stock, or just trash it? What do you think? Has any one used the cammo tape?

I like your idea of making it a Camo stock, just work it till it works, and keep it.

If it's wood, try your best to get some good old Elmers wood glue in the cracked portion, and see if you can apply any type of clamping force to it. If it's a synthetic, maybe some epoxy and some clamping. Good to hear they provided that level of customer service. I recently received a Boyd's Pro Varmint for a build, and for the price it is a rocking stock, which they finish in a textured black paint. I have used what I guess is the Krylon equivalent and it comes out pretty nice if you like that type of finish. Basically almost flat black with just enough texture to provide a solid grip/holding surface without feeling like sand paper. Just a couple of maybe ideas, the only place I have used the Camo tape was on an all aluminum framed high power Air rifle, and the stuff I had was kinda like that ace bandage that only sticks to itself, not the surface, so it could be put on, and taken off without residue.

Hope that helps a little,
Casey

I had a similar issue with my RA 30.06 ....A small crack at the rear of the trigger guard. I noticed it when I was checking all the screws after cleaning it. I called Ruger , really just so they would make record of it. I also emailed them several pic's ( the crack was so small that it could hardly be seen ) and was asked several questions. I also gave them some info about the rifle, when purchased ( May '12 ) ...How many rds. shot (about 3K ) . Then I was asked my opinion of the rifle and if I would recommend a similar Rifle to other potential shooters. When I told him that my wife and I have 13 Ruger Firearms and am totally pleased with them all....He seemed speechless for a minute then told me a new stock would be shipped to me with in 24 hrs. ....I got it in less than a week. He also told me how to fix any small cracks in the future using ABS cement ( like Plumbers use ). He also told me several Camo stocks are made for all RA Rifles. I haven't changed the stock as of now but , I am thinking of maybe Camo of some other painted finish just to Customize just a little. I have a 10/22 Camo and a 10/22 Camo Take Down , I think Ruger does a great job with their stocks. If you do Camo or wrap your stock Greg please post a pic or two.

Gorilla Glue would be an EXCELLENT idea, Plus? After it expands, you can sand it lightly, and get a good finish on it. The Camo Wrap if you're talking hydrostatically is an wonderful thing as well!

Thanks for the ideas guys.. I have been looking around and might try painting it. Its a extra stock so if it gets screwed up I can always base coat it again.

So I got back to painting this stock. With a 70 plus degrees day in February I couldn't resist some painting.

I decided to not glue the cracked one and just took the plunge and painted the replacement that ruger sent me.

First the start:

Base coat:

Then the "pattern" for the first layer:

Layer 1 paint done:

Layer 2 pattern:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BxiaR ... V92TElFS0k

Layer 2 complete:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BxiaR ... WtaekltY2M

Completed paint:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BxiaR ... jBZVWxLbkk

Close up:

It turned out OK. I have the other stock I might try some paint on too.

Thanks, I was hoping for more patterns to show up. Overall I am happy with it, but I will have to do some practice sprays and see how I can get the other to turn out.
