D.C. passes $15 minimum wage

Post by dorminWS »

So, if a Virginia company sends a Virginia resident worker who is based in Virginia into D. C. and his normal wage is $12/hour, does he get a raise while he is working in D.C.? I guess so. But what if he is just driving through on his way from Front Royal to West Virginia or Maryland? Seems to me like it will insure that as much gets done outside of D.C. as can possibly be done outside of D.C. And that may be a good thing.

Pinsetters had a union. Burger flippers have D.C. City Council.

Too many parallels to pinsetters to mention in a short post.

Pardon my lack of knowledge, by pinsetter are you referring to this? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinsetter and the way it was replaced by machines?

Yes. Menial labor. An opportunity for kids to make a little pocket money.

yep, lots of manual labor job workers are going to be surprised when they get replaced by robots. I saw a story about one of the burger chains that has one that will take a patty from frozen to cooked, topped, wrapped ready to serve. Catch was it was more expensive than people, but the break point was close to $20/hour, so it's coming soon.

Start up costs may be higher with robots, but robots don't call in sick, sneak outside to smoke pot behind the dumpster, come in drunk, quit midshift, cuss out customers, complain about work conditions, threaten lawsuits, or a whole host of other irritating things that people do.

Plus, the cost of robots will go down in time. So, yeah. It's coming.

Speaking of auto-mation: Google self-drive is being promoted for commuter cars and busses, but I fear for the entirety of the transportation industry.

You know what I noticed the other day, but no one has the chutzpah to speak it?

Every day in the 50/60's. a Tide of black women would take buses, carpools into the suburbs to be housemaids, and nannies.

Flash forward, driving into the suburbs where they have moved businesses to accommodate the middle management, there is a plethora of black women driving the same routes as before.

Think about that. They went from being house maids, and nannies to being call center folk, and production clerks... low wages, same trek.... (shakes head) And they think the Dems have been a boon for their community.

Re: the self driving cars;

They are also working on self driving big rigs.

I can't say that I like the idea of automated automobiles. When electro-gadgetry attached to braking systems, transmission systems, and/or steering fails at 70mph, the consequences could be catastrophic. It wouldn't be good on something the size of a smart car; could you imagine how bad it would be on a tractor trailer?

Machines break. Anyone who has driven cars or used computers can attest to that.

they already have self driving haul trucks at large mines. at 400,000 lbs empty, your big-rig looks like a radio flyer in comparison. Also at several million a truck, if there were problems with the control systems that lead to loss/damage of trucks it would not take long before the mine owner switched back to manual trucks.

I knew that large farms had tractors that steered using gps, but they still required a driver for input.

precision farming has been the norm for many many years now. Yes, still have operators, but it likely wouldn't be much of a stretch to eliminate them.

When I go to shopping I try to avoid self-checkout registers. I feel guilty for the jobs I helped cut with business processes automation. But in the same time, the company grow; and hires more people, but in different positions. Probably until next wave of automation...
