Can a registered democrat vote outside of the party?

Yes I was young and dumb at one point. Im a registered democrat who voted for Obama in 08.

Did a write in vote for Ron Paul in 2012. However I'm actually wondering if my registered party status caused my vote to be cast out.

Also, seeing how I'm NOT voting for Trump or Hillary this year I'm wondering if I need to re-register as an independent before Nov.

Don't know which state you are in but in the Primary election you likely must vote for the party which you are registered.

For the General election (Nov) you can vote for any name on the ballot or write in your choice.

The Libertarian Party will be on the ballot in all 50 states and would be happy to welcome disenfranchised Democrats and Republicans.

I'm either registered as a Republican or an Independent. Over the years, I've registered to vote as both. Which box I check depends largely on my mood at the time.

But, since the voting is (theoretically) anonymous, they wouldn't really have a way to go back and check to see if registered Democrats actually voted Democrat.

Your party does not matter at all for main elections. As a registered Democrat you could vote for anyone you want. You could even vote for a Libertarian presidential candidate, a Republican Governor and a Democratic Senator all in the same election if you wanted or any other combination.

The only time your registered party matters is if you are in a state that only allows registered party members to vote in that party's primary.

In Virginia, it doesn't matter, a Republican or Democrat or Independent can vote in whichever primary he/she wants but can only vote in one primary. Example: as a registered Liberterian, I chose to vote in the Democratic primary. I could have voted in the Republican primary if I wanted, but not both.

Sounds good, I'll have to check with the state but I'm planning on writing in for Cruz if he registers. If not I'll research libertarian candidates.
